Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a cross-breed of poodle and Maltese. They typically stand 10-15 inches tall and can weigh up to 20 pounds. Generally, Maltipoos have a lifespan of 10-15 years and are fairly low-maintenance when it comes to grooming needs. They are considered to be intelligent, energetic, and loyal. Maltipoos can easily join a pack of dogs, cats, and people. They are best with couples, families, and those who have plenty of time and energy to give their pets.
Allergy to Maltipoos is highly individual and can range from mild to severe. Generally speaking, Maltipoos are low-shedding, hypoallergenic dogs due to their combination of Maltese and Poodle parentage. That said, some may still cause allergic reactions due to their fur, saliva, and dander. People who are sensitive to certain breeds or to certain types of fur should always do research and may even want to meet a Maltipoo in person before deciding if it is the right breed for them.
Maltipoos should not be fed anything which contains artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Chocolate, grapes, raw meats, seeds, and nuts should also be avoided as these can be poisonous to Maltipoos. Additionally, treats should not make up more than 10% of your Maltipoo's overall daily caloric intake as it can lead to obesity. While Maltipoos may beg for treats while you eat, it is best to stick to feeding them a healthy diet of specifically designed kibble, wet food, and select, occasional, healthy treats.
Preparing for a new Maltipoo is a very exciting and rewarding experience! To get started, you should research the breed so you understand their specific needs, such as diet, exercise and grooming requirements. Consider buying quality supplies to support your canine companion's health, like a bed, crate, collar, leash, shampoo, toothbrush and toys. Familiarize yourself with local dog-friendly spots like parks, stores and restaurants so you can take regular, enjoyable walks with your pet.
Maltipoos reach adulthood when they are around a year old and can grow to between 5 and 15 pounds. This tiny dog breed generally measures 8-14 inches tall from their paws to their shoulder, which makes them perfect as a lapdog for those who don't have much room. For perspective, Maltipoos are usually about the same size as the average housecat. Keeping good care of your Maltipoo and providing an appropriate amount of food and exercise can help to keep them healthy and happy.
Maltipoos, otherwise known as maltese-poodle mixes, have a lot of energy and love to be active. This means they typically enjoy swimming, leaving it up to the individual owners if their Maltipoo is allowed to. Some Maltipoos may not enjoy the water, instead preferring to stay dry and run around outdoors. Maltipoos are usually happy to explore, however, so given a chance many of them become quite enthusiastic about spending time in the pool or another body of water.
Maltipoos are an ideal companion for families with kids! They are docile, loving, gentle, and cheerful, making them wonderful playmates for children. Furthermore, their smaller size might make them a bit less intimidating for younger kids. Maltipoos tend to be quite gentle and tolerant of accidental roughness from children, plus they are intelligent companions that can help to teach children responsibility and compassion. In addition, Maltipoos are easy to train, so children will have little trouble learning how to handle them properly.
Training your Maltipoo is an important part of setting the foundation for a strong and balanced bond between you and your pup. A great way to do this is to take advantage of positive reinforcement training. Start by providing your Maltipoo with treats when they successfully complete a task or display desirable behavior. These rewards will create a positive association and make your pup eager to learn and train. Additionally, make sure to stay active—take your pup for a walk or play fetch— so that they become better acclimated to the ‘outside world’.
