Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a relatively new breed of dog, meaning they have not yet been officially recognized by any major kennel clubs. But they are undeniably a favorite breed among pet owners, due to their friendly personalities and sweet dispositions. These dogs are a cross between Maltese and Poodle breeds and typically have a long, curly coat and low-shedding advantage. They crave companionship and are incredibly smart, so they thrive when they're around people and being given lots of attention.
The Maltipoo coat is known for being dense, soft, and curly. It often has an abundant sheen with a texture similar to that of human hair. Typically, the coat is light to medium in length and needs regular brushing to keep its luxuriant look. Color-wise, Maltipoos come in an array of combinations such as white, cream, apricot, silver, chocolate, and gray. Despite needing regular maintenance, one great thing about the Maltipoo's coat is that it does not require a ton of trimming, like other breeds of Poodles.
Feeding a Maltipoo is an important responsibility. Your puppy should be fed a balanced diet to ensure it grows into a healthy, happy pet. The primary diet for a Maltipoo should be a high-quality, species-appropriate dry kibble formulated with the necessary vitamins and minerals for a young, growing dog. You can also supplement their dry kibble with wet food, fresh or frozen vegetables, and fresh or frozen meat. Treats should be limited and given only after you have taken into account the calcium, phosphorus, and fat content.
Before bringing your new Maltipoo home, there are some steps you should take to ensure your pet is safe and comfortable. If you have other pets in the house, create a safe and separate space for the Maltipoo. Make sure the room is furbaby-proofed by removing anything that might be harmful or hazardous to the Maltipoo. Purchase the necessary supplies, such as food, water and food dishes, a bed, toys, and other accessories specific to your Maltipoo's needs.
Maltipoos are not generally considered big dogs when compared to more traditional breeds, such as Retrievers or Mastiffs. Generally, Maltipoos are classified as being toy-sized, meaning they usually stand up to a foot in height and weigh anywhere from 4 to 10 pounds. Though small, these little companions are considered to be intelligent, loving, and eager to please which makes them a great choice for someone looking for a pet to fit into an apartment style living space.
Maltipoos are small, active dogs that require regular physical activity to stay healthy and content. The amount of exercise needed for a Maltipoo will depend on its age and its individual personality. Generally speaking, adult Maltipoos need to be exercised for at least 30 minutes a day to keep their physical and mental health in check. Puppies, on the other hand, can benefit from an hour or more of activity each day.
Maltipoos, while small, make great family dogs. They are friendly, affectionate, and highly adaptable; all ideal qualities to make an excellent dog for all family members. Their trainability and intelligence give them an added bonus when it comes to finding success in any family home. Maltipoos are also non-shedding, making them a popular choice for those who cannot handle dealing with shedded hair (or those who don’t want to spend much time vacuuming every day).
Training a Maltipoo can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour of your time each day, depending on the age, abilities, and temperament of the dog, as well as the goals you have for it. It is important to do consistent, daily training for your Maltipoo in order to get the most out of working with them. Generally, if you are just starting out with your pup, 20 to 30 minutes per day is recommended. As your pup becomes more experienced and learned, more dedication to the time spent training will be necessary.
