Questions & Answers
Maltipoos, which are a hybrid breed created by crossing between a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle, are highly intelligent, gentle, loving, and social dogs. They usually exhibit a positive outlook and are eager to please their owners. They are an ideal companion for someone looking for a small, low-shedding, low-allergy dog. Maltipoo adults range in size from 6 to 20 pounds and Maltipoos usually live 12 to 14 years or more.
Maltipoos, a hybrid breed, are considered to be a shedding-reduced breed, because they tend to inherit the non-shedding coat of their Poodle parent and the Maltese parent's low-shedding coat. However, all dogs do shed some fur—Maltipoos included. The majority of owners do find that shedding is much less pronounced with a Maltipoo than with other breeds. This could be especially beneficial for people who suffer from dog allergies. With proper brushing, frequent bathing and frequent vacuuming, you may experience a decrease in shedding.
It is important to know the diet of Maltipoos to keep them healthy. Generally, Maltipoos should be given high quality dry kibble specifically designed for small dogs. Avoid feeding them human foods as these often contain fats, salts, and sugars which can be harmful. Be sure to avoid onions, garlic, chives, and mushrooms which can be similarly harmful. Raw or undercooked meats are also not recommended as these can carry bacteria that can result in foodborne illnesses. In addition, avoid feeding them items such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, avocados, and candy.
Ensuring your home is prepared for your new Maltipoo is an important step in providing a safe, secure, and comfortable environment. Start by puppy-proofing, removing clutter, breakable items, and hazardous materials such as plants and antifreeze. Make sure that furniture is well-secured and certain cords and wires are hidden from reach. Create a safe space for your Maltipoo with a crate and provide plenty of chew toys, beds, and blankets. Establish a routine to make sure basic needs are met including walks, playtime, and meals.
Maltipoos typically range in size from toy to medium, depending on the size of their parents. The weight of their adult form can vary, with some Maltipoos reaching up to 20 pounds and others remaining under 10. Though, on average, toy Maltipoos weigh about 4-8 pounds, miniature Maltipoos hover around 10-15 pounds, and medium ones generally stay between 15-20 pounds. Additionally, the size of a Maltipoo's coat may vary.
Maltipoos are active dogs, so they need regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Generally, this breed needs between 30 minutes and one hour of moderate activity each day. This could include walks, runs, trips to the dog park, playtime, or any other type of activity that gets them moving. To help avoid health problems, it's important that Maltipoos get enough exercise on a regular basis. If the breed is getting too much or too little exercise, it could lead to health issues and/or behaviors.
Maltipoos are known to be very social, personable and friendly dogs, and as a result, they usually get along well with other pets. Using positive reinforcement coupled with consistent training from a young age helps Maltipoos learn to cooperate with other pets. Proper socialization also plays an important role in aiding them to make positive interactions with other animals. As long as Maltipoos are exposed to different kinds of pets in an appropriate manner from an early age, chances are that they will get along just fine with other furry members of their family.
Training a Maltipoo is not necessarily easy, but it is certainly possible with dedication and patience. These dogs are incredibly intelligent, so the key is to remain consistent throughout the training process and to praise positive behaviors. It is also important to take a reward-based approach during training, as this will encourage your Maltipoo to look forward to the training sessions. Remember to keep each session short and focused, as this is more likely to keep your Maltipoo engaged and help them learn quickly.
