Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a small-sized hybrid between a Maltese and a Poodle. These dogs are generally a mix of the intelligence and playfulness of a Poodle with the loyalty and loving personality of a Maltese. Maltipoos generally have the low-shedding and hypoallergenic coat of a Poodle, making them a great fit for allergy sufferers and minimalists alike.
The Maltipoo coat is varied and unique, depending on its parent breeds (Maltese and Poodle). Generally, a Maltipoo coat is neither too long nor too short, with modest waviness that gives it a soft and almost velvety feel. They carry their coats in a variety of colors such as white, black, chocolate, cream, and apricot. Maltipoos can have a singleor double-layer coat, with the double layer being slightly prone to tangling.
Maltipoos have generally the same dietary needs as other small breed dogs. Generally, a balanced, high-quality kibble diet is ideal for these dogs to maintain their active lifestyle. Higher protein levels along with essential vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids support healthy bones and coat, and can be supplemented with tender meats, vegetables, and fruits. It's important to provide the recommended daily calorie intake to avoid obesity, which can strain the joints and lead to other serious health problems. A Maltipoo should also have fresh water available at all times.
Before getting a Maltipoo, it is important to purchase the essentials for the pup’s needs. This includes, but is not limited to, food and water bowls, a comfortable bed, high-quality dog food, grooming supplies, toys, and the necessary vaccinations and vet checkups. You will also need to invest in a toilet-training system, a collar and leash, and a pet carrier for travel. If you are able to, it might be helpful to invest in protective items such as window guards and stair gates to ensure the safe home of your Maltipoo.
Maltipoos are not considered big dogs. In fact, this breed usually stands at around 10 to 15 inches at the shoulder and weighs in around 10 to 15 pounds. Maltipoos typically have a small, compact body and an attractive, cuddly appearance. While they may not be considered big dogs, their personalities are as giant as any breed. Maltipoos have excellent temperaments, are highly intelligent and are known for their playful attitudes. Additionally, they quickly become very attached to their human companions and are always eager to please their owners.
While every Maltipoo is different and its owner should take its individual needs into account, it is generally recommended that Maltipoos be walked for at least 30 minutes each day. Depending on the size and energy level of the Maltipoo, longer walks can be beneficial. A Maltipoo should have the opportunity to run and play and stretch their legs. Not only does exercise help maintain a healthy weight, but it also helps keep the Maltipoo mentally and physically healthy. Regular walks are important for socializing and teaching basic commands.
Maltipoos typically get along very well with kids! They are known for being an intelligent, loyal, and loving breed, all of which are qualities which make them great companions for the whole family. They are relatively small, so can be great for kids of all ages, and as long as they are properly socialized, they will be friendly and fun with just about everyone. Maltipoos are very responsive to training as well, so you may even find that owning one will help to teach your kids responsibility and planning.
Training your Maltipoo should be an enjoyable process that builds trust between you and your pup. Start with basic commands such as 'sit' and 'stay,' and give lots of positive reinforcement, such as treats or verbal praise. Break up training into small sessions, approximately 10-15 minutes each, and focus on one new thing at a time. Make sure your training sessions are always in a positive, encouraging environment, free from distractions. Additionally, start by teaching your pup recurring activities such as potty training or learning how to walk on a leash.
