Questions & Answers
The most interesting thing about Maltipoos is their combination of characteristics from both the Maltese and Toy Poodle breeds. They boast a pleasing, outgoing personality while simultaneously being small enough to fit into most living spaces. Maltipoos can also benefit from the predisposition towards intelligence that both of their parent breeds possess, making them highly trainable. They are also known to have a low shedding coat, which can range from slightly wavy to curly, making them an ideal choice for those who suffer from pet allergies.
Maltipoos are a hybrid breed that are typically considered hypoallergenic and non-shedding. While they do not shed as much as some other breeds, their low-shedding coats cannot be guaranteed and some may require more grooming than other breeds. Maltipoos typically possess a combination of the traits from the Maltese and Poodle breeds, which are both considered light shedders and therefore not likely to cause allergic reactions.
It is best to avoid certain human foods when feeding your Maltipoo. Human foods such as coffee, chocolate, alcohol, dairy, eggs, salty snacks, salty peanut butter, and overly sweet treats should not be given to a Maltipoo. Some human food can be toxic and can cause gastrointestinal upset, an increase in cholesterol levels, and possible pancreatitis in Maltipoos. Additionally, excessive grains such as corn, wheat, and rice should be avoided, as they can be difficult to digest for Maltipoos.
Preparing your home for a new Maltipoo is an exciting and important process that involves creating a safe and welcoming environment for your new pet. Start by purchasing the necessary supplies such as a bed, food and water bowls, leash, collar, toys, and treats. Set up a specific area for your Maltipoo that is away from household hazards and other pets, if applicable. Keep household chemicals and cleaners out of reach, get the house animal-proofed, and stock up on dog-safe household items.
Maltipoos are typically small-to-medium sized dogs and are not considered large by any means. Generally speaking, Maltipoos are categorized as a toy breed, and their size is usually between that of a toy poodle and a Maltese. They typically weigh less than 10 pounds and stand less than 11 inches tall, with some individuals being smaller. While Maltipoos may not be considered big dogs, they do tend to be a good fit for those who prefer a smaller pet. They are intelligent, friendly, and very loyal companions, and make excellent family pets.
Absolutely! Maltipoos are highly energetic and active dogs that love running and exercise and as long as the temperature is comfortable, moderate humidity and appropriate conditioning isn't an issue, running with your Maltipoo is a great way to both exercise and bond with your pup. Just make sure to start slowly and gradually build up the amount of time you're running for as it can put a lot of stress on your pup's body and joints.
Maltipoos typically get along very well with kids. These affectionate dogs form strong bonds with children and can show them a great deal of love and loyalty. They make great playmates because they are energetic and enjoy playing games. Maltipoos can also be patient and gentle, making them great companions for younger children. Maltipoos require socialization and proper training from a young age so that they learn to interact politely and safely with children.
Training Maltipoos requires an investment of time. Depending on the age, breed, and specific needs of your pup, the amount of time exercised will vary. Generally, owners should start with 10 to 30 minutes of exercise per day, broken into two or three small sessions. As the pup matures, this can be increased to up to an hour per day. It is important to remember that over-exerting your Maltipoo can be harmful, and extra time should only be added gradually as it is able to tolerate it.
