Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a “designer” or hybrid puppy created by crossing a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. They are classified as a Toy or Companion breed and are considered to be a hypoallergenic and relatively low-shedding breed. Maltipoos are typically smaller in size, standing around 8-14 inches tall, and living between 10-15 years on average. Despite their small size, they are surprisingly intelligent and sociable dogs.
Maltipoos can potentially cause an allergic reaction in some people; however, it has been found that people who have allergies to dogs are no more likely to have allergies to the Maltipoo breed than another. Maltipoos themselves have a generally hypoallergenic coat which is a combination of an Hypoallergenic Poodle coat and a Maltese coat. So, while Maltipoos can cause allergic reactions, it is not a certainty that it will cause allergies.
Maltipoos, a hybrid of a Maltese and Poodle, have a diverse diet that should include high-quality food specifically formulated for small breeds. They should be offered dry kibble and occasional wet food, but with small breeds, you should be careful not to overfeed because they are prone to obesity. It is important to feed them multiple times a day, usually a small morning and evening meal with an additional snack in the middle of the day; this will help prevent overeating. Additionally, they should have access to fresh, clean water at all times.
To prepare for your new Maltipoo pup, begin by researching the breed to better understand their needs. Create an environment for your pup that will encourage healthy behavior, such as establishing boundaries for where your pup is allowed to go with training tools such as crates. Additionally, maltipoos are a social breed so ensure that your pup gets lots of time with other dogs and humans. Make sure you have the necessary supplies like food, toys, and a bedding area.
Maltipoos are absolutely considered small dogs, as they tend to range in size from 5 to 20 pounds and stand at 8 to 14 inches at the shoulders. This hybrid breed is a cross between the Maltese and the Toy or Miniature Poodle, and is known to have a sweet, lively temperament. Additionally, they are often favored for their low-shed coat that has a tendency to curl, giving them an extra-cute look. Maltipoos make excellent companion animals owing to their tiny size and their great companionability.
Maltipoos are a highly active breed of dog, requiring a moderate level of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Exercise requirements for a Maltipoo will vary depending on their age and health, but in general, it's recommended that Maltipoos have at least 45 minutes to an hour of exercise each day. This should include a combination of activities, such as a daily walk, an outdoor game of fetch, and perhaps a visit to the dog park to give them an opportunity to interact with other dogs.
Maltipoos can make great pets for families with kids. They are known for being gentle and friendly, plus they are small in size, making them ideal for children. Maltipoos are inherently trainable and have an innate desire to please, which makes them easier to teach than many other breeds. Additionally, many Maltipoos come from poodles, meaning that they tend to be intelligent, loyal, and agile. These qualities are helpful for teaching children patience and respect for their pet.
Training a Maltipoo is a great way to bond with your pup, but it is important to use positive reinforcement during the training. Start by teaching the basics such as potty training, basic commands (sit, stay, come, etc.) and even some tricks, which can be fun. It is best practice to keep training sessions relatively short as Maltipoos are very eager to learn, but can get easily distracted. Be sure to reward your pup with positive reinforcement, like verbal praise or treats, when they do something correctly.
