Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a hybrid breed of dog that is made up of a Poodle and a Maltese. They are classified as a companion dog and in general, exhibit the traits of a lap dog. Maltipoos are intelligent, loyal, and gentle and are well-known for their charming personalities. They come in a variety of colors, sizes, and fur textures and can range from 2 to 25 lbs.
Maltipoos typically do not shed as much as many other breeds. These hybrid dogs, which are a mix of the Maltese and the Toy and Miniature Poodle, are known for their hypoallergenic coats, which make them a great fit for people with allergies. Because the thickness and texture of the coat depends on the genetics of each individual dog, there is no guarantee that every Maltipoo won’t shed at all. However, they generally do not shed as much hair as their parents, and in most cases, their hair should remain fairly soft and silky.
Maltipoos are small, intelligent breeds and need a specific diet to stay healthy and active. It is important to not feed them human food, such as chocolate, onions, grapes, and raisins. These items are toxic to your Maltipoo and can cause sickness and possible death. Maltipoos should also avoid foods that are high in fat as they can create an imbalance in their diet and health. Other than these, table scraps, rawhide chews, and high-fat treats should also be avoided as they can cause gastrointestinal distress.
Before getting a Maltipoo, it is important to get some essential supplies. First, you will need to purchase food and treats designed specifically for a Maltipoo’s health. Also, you will need to invest in a quality dog bed or crate, a collar and leash, grooming supplies, toys, and a flea/tick preventive solution. Furthermore, a Maltipoo will need regular veterinary care, so it is a good idea to locate a vet in your area before the pup arrives.
Maltipoos come in a variety of sizes, depending on the type of Poodle used to create them. Generally, they can range in size from toy sized, 4-6 pounds, to small, 6-9 pounds, and medium, 9-18 pounds. Depending on the parents, they may even be larger. Of course, size can also vary based on diet and exercise, so it's important to determine an appropriate size for your lifestyle.
Maltipoos are very energetic and social dogs and need daily exercise in order to stay healthy and happy. The amount of exercise depends on the individual Maltipoo's age, physical health, size, and activity level. Generally speaking, for an adult Maltipoo, they should get a minimum of one hour of exercise in several shorter sessions throughout the day. Younger Maltipoos may need two or three shorter sessions. Exercise options include walks, hikes, a run, or some mental stimulation through play or interactive toys.
Maltipoos are commonly considered to be great choices for families with children due to their very friendly and affectionate nature. Maltipoos typically form strong bonds with entire families but especially with children since they are known for their outgoing disposition and playful behavior. With their inherent tendency to be exceptionally patient and loving pets, Maltipoos usually excel at being gentle, cuddly, and tolerant, even when upset or provoked. Furthermore, they are known for being calm and easily trainable, which makes them wonderful companions for families with young children.
Training a Maltipoo can be a rewarding and enjoyable activity. To get started, it's important to understand the breed’s characteristics, temperament and desired behaviors. As a hybrid dog, the Maltipoo's inherited intelligence and sociable nature lend well to teaching and training. It's important to be consistent and patient when introducing basic commands and behaviors. Positive reinforcement through treats, toys and verbal praise work best. Set aside time each day to train your Maltipoo, and continue to offer reinforcement for wanted actions.
