Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are very affectionate, gentle-natured, and intelligent dogs that make great companions. They are a designer breed, a mix between the Maltese and Toy Poodle breeds, and weigh anywhere from 4-20lbs. Maltipoos are known for being low-shedding and hypoallergenic, and require regular grooming that includes trimming the hair on its head, feet, and other areas. They are smart and eager to please, making them easy to train and respond well to positive reinforcement; however, they can be somewhat vocal.
The Maltipoo has a unique coat that majors in cuteness! Its soft and fluffy coat is normally curly, wavy or straight. The length of the coat depends on the specific type of Maltipoo and can range from short to medium long. The texture can vary from wavy to curly, similar to the poodle, or straight like a Maltese. Some popular colors for the Maltipoo coat are white, cream, apricot, red, silver, black, brown, and sable.
Maltipoos, like all other dogs, should be given a diet that is nutritious, balanced, and tailored to their specific needs. Generally, their diet should contain a mixture of high-quality dry dog food and wet dog food, and provide adequate amounts of protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals for their growth and energy. In addition to the regular diet, some owners may opt to supplement the diet with healthy treats such as fresh fruit, vegetables, and meats.
Maltipoos have some unique requirements when it comes to their care. The hybrid breed is known for being active and needing exercise, so they will need daily walks and mental stimulation. They also have a higher tendency toward obesity than other breeds, so it's important to measure food and maintain a healthy, balanced diet. Grooming needs are also fairly specific to Maltipoos; their coat grows quickly and should be brushed every day, and they may need to be professionally groomed every six to eight weeks. Additionally, their large ears may need to be cleaned and checked for wax build-up regularly.
Maltipoos typically reach a maximum of 15 inches in height when fully grown. While there is quite a bit of variation from one individual to the next, most Maltipoos will reach a weight between 6 and 20 pounds. This is dependent on several factors, such as the size and genetics of the parent breed, whether they’re male or female, and their diet. Generally, Maltipoos are considered to be a smallto medium-sized breed, and though some may be smaller or larger, their size is still within a normal range.
Maltipoos generally love being immersed in the water, so it is likely that they would enjoy swimming! They typically are comfortable around water due to the Poodle heritage in their mix, and Maltipoos are noted for being brave and curious. They also have a natural affinity for swimming due to their strong legs and deep chests which equip them with necessary skills. While some Maltipoos would rather stay dry, the majority usually find swimming fun and can keep up in the water for a decent while.
Maltipoos can make excellent companions for families with children. They are typically loving, loyal, intelligent, and alert. They can also be very energetic, and their playful nature can make them great playmates for kids. The Maltipoo's size is perfect for kids to handle, as they stay small and can be easily managed. Similarly, their gentle, soft coats make for great cuddle partners. A Maltipoo's trainability is also a major bonus when it comes to kids, as most learn basic obedience commands quickly and follow orders well.
Training a Maltipoo should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for both you and your pup! How much time you dedicate to their training daily ultimately depends on you and what your goals are. In general, most pet owners aim for around 10-15 minutes of focused training per day, but you can certainly add more time as needed and your Maltipoo's individual progress dictates. Depending on their age and progress, multiple short training sessions may be more effective than one long session. If you're seeking quick results, increasing your daily training sessions to 30 minutes or more per day is recommended.
