Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are perhaps best known for their incredibly charming personalities! As a dedicated companion breed, they are known for their loving nature and friendly disposition. They're intelligent, alert, loyal, and sociable, making them wonderful family pets. The most interesting thing about Maltipoos, however, is their distinctive coat. The combination of the two parent breeds Poodle and Maltese results in a coat that is soft, fluffy, and low shedding.
The Maltipoo coat is quite special and varies even within the breed. Generally, Maltipoos tend to have a very fluffy, silky, and relatively long coat with the distinct teddy bear cut. A Maltipoo's coat can range from a soft and wavy texture to a thick and curly one. The coat may also come in an assortment of colors from solid black, white, cream, brown, gray, or blue. All colors tend to have a low to minimal shedding and are very easy to maintain.
Maltipoos should not be given anything that is unhealthy for any dog, such as sweets, lettuce, chocolate, and caffeinated beverages. All these foods can make them sick. Additionally, bones are a potential choking hazard, so it is best to avoid raw or cooked bones. Due to their small size, it is important to be aware of the size of treats you are giving them. Too big a treat can be difficult to swallow, leading to choking or digestive issues. It is recommended to stay away from items high in sodium or sugar such as processed snacks.
To get your home ready for your new Maltipoo, you'll want to ensure that any off-limits areas are blocked off with baby gates or closed doors. You'll also need to puppy proof your home by examining each room in the house for items that could be inadvertently chewed. Make sure to secure any electrical wires out of the puppy's reach and put away any and all toxic or hazardous cleaning supplies. Finally, you'll want to purchase some essential items like a bed, food and water dishes, puppy pads, and toys.
Maltipoos typically reach an adult size of 6-14 pounds and stand 8-14 inches tall at the shoulder. Depending on which parent breed they take after (you may have noticed that Maltipoos look different from one family to another), they can have a range of shapes and sizes. Most Maltipoos maintain a sturdy, well-proportioned frame and reach their full adult size around one year of age.
Maltipoos are highly active dogs and can be quite a handful. Thanks to their Poodle parent, they have a lot of energy that needs to be channeled and regulated. If their energy is not maintained, they can become anxious, destructive, or difficult to manage. Though endearingly known as a “lap dog,” a Maltipoo needs to be taken for regular strolls, get quality exercise regularly, play games, or go for a run. Give them plenty of room and activities to burn off their energy and they’ll thrive.
Maltipoos can make wonderful pets for families with children, as they typically get along extremely well with kids. These loving little pups typically bring joy to homes with their playful personalities and warm affection. Maltipoos tend to form strong bonds with their family members, especially kids, and enjoy spending time with them. They can be very protective of their owners, which can make them especially good companions for children looking for a loving playmate. They're usually gentle, patient, and great listeners, so even the youngest members of the family will always feel safe and loved around their Maltipoo pal.
Training a Maltipoo is not too difficult, but it will take some time and patience. It's important to be consistent with your training techniques so that your dog can learn the desired behaviors quickly. The best way to start is by using positive reinforcement techniques, such as rewarding your Maltipoo with treats or praise when they do something correctly. You can also use crate training and obedience training to further reinforce the desired behaviors. To begin, it's important to make sure your Maltipoo is familiar with basic commands such as "sit," "stay," and "come.
