Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are charming, gentle, intelligent, and social dogs that make excellent family companions. They are a hybrid breed that is a mix of a Poodle and Maltese. They usually weigh between five and 20 pounds and have a lifespan of around 12 to 15 years. As a toy breed, they may be susceptible to dental issues and similarly delicate bones, so special diets and regular dental cleanings should be taken into consideration when providing care. They typically have a soft, wavy coat that may be long, short, or even curly.
While Maltipoos may not cause all individuals to have allergies, it is possible as they do shed and produce dander. If you have allergies, it is recommended to meet with your doctor or an allergist before committing to a Maltipoo. Depending on the severity of your allergies, it may prove to be a difficult decision, as Maltipoos can make wonderful companions that provide comfort and companionship, however their allergies could be an issue.
A Maltipoo's dietary needs can vary depending on their size and age. In general, owners should feed their pup a high quality, balanced diet with an appropriate amount of calories for their size and activity level. Dry kibble should make up the majority of their diet, and can be supplemented with canned food, cooked meats, vegetables, dairy products, eggs, and other lean proteins. Small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables can be added to their diet as an occasional treat. It's important to remember that a Maltipoo should not become overweight, so portion sizes should be appropriate.
Before bringing your Maltipoo home, you should prepare your house with items like food, water, a bed, toys, and a crate. Make sure all electrical cords are safely tucked away and items that can be damaged by a pet are out of reach of your Maltipoo. Obtain a few treats for your pup so you can begin teaching your Maltipoo basic obedience commands. Additionally, make sure the yard is securely fenced, and dangerous plants or sharp tools/objects are removed.
The size of your Maltipoo puppy can vary depending on the parent breeds of the puppy. Generally speaking, Maltipoos are considered small dogs. Their average full-grown weight is typically between 5-10 lbs and the average height is 8-14 inches. However, there is potential for a Maltipoo to grow larger depending on if their parents were either a Maltese or Poodle. While Maltese are typically smaller and more petite pups, Poodles can range in size from small toy sizes to larger standards and their height can reach above 15 inches at the shoulder.
Maltipoos are a hybrid breed, so the amount of exercise they need depends on the elements of their gene pool. Generally, the size and activity level of the parents will impact the exercise needs of the Maltipoo. With a mix between a Maltese and a Poodle, you can expect the exercise needs to be moderate but still requires daily walks and a good play session. To allow the Maltipoo to get the necessary exercise and mental stimulation, you should plan to provide at least 30 minutes of exercise per day.
Generally speaking, Maltipoos are known to have a gentle and affectionate nature, which makes them an ideal companion for children of all ages. They are eager to please and love to spend time around the house with their family, getting to know each of their family members. As long as Maltipoos are well-socialized as a puppy and provided with proper training and structure, they typically get along great with children and can make wonderful members of the family.
Training Maltipoos can require a great deal of time and effort. Generally, it is recommended to dedicate 15 to 30 minutes per day to training your Maltipoo. This should include activities such as basic obedience training, reinforcement of good behavior and even fun activities like teaching your dog tricks. Depending on how quickly your Maltipoo learns, you may need more or less time each day for training. Additionally, your training efforts should be consistent and include plenty of praise as rewards for correct behaviors. The importance of consistency and regular praise can not be overemphasized.
