Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a popular hybrid dog breed that is considered a "designer" dog. They're a mix between a Miniature or Toy Poodle and a Maltese, and are also known as "Malti-Poos," "Maltese-Poodles," or "MalteseDoodles." Maltipoos tend to have a playful and amicable personality, making them a good fit for active families. They usually range in size from 4 to 10 pounds and have a moderate lifespan of 12 to 15 years.
Maltipoos are considered to be a non-shedding breed. These pups were created by crossing a Toy or Miniature Poodle with a Maltese, resulting in a cross-breed that inherits some of the Poodle's low-shedding properties. Maltipoos have thick, wavy coats, and their fur usually grows longer on their legs, tail, and ears. Generally, frequent grooming helps to limit shedding, but Maltipoos do not shed like some of the bigger breeds do.
Finding the best dog food for your Maltipoo can be challenging. A good rule of thumb is to look for quality dog food brands that include meats as the first ingredient, like chicken, lamb, beef, etc., and grains like oats, brown rice, barley, etc., as a source of carbohydrates. Fresh fruits and vegetables, like apples, sweet potatoes, carrots, etc., should also be included as important sources of vitamins and minerals. Avoid dog food with artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives as these are unhealthy add-ins.
Before bringing your new Maltipoo home, take the time to get prepared! Spend some time researching the breed, learning about factors such as their exercise needs, grooming habits, how to crate train, diet, and necessary veterinary care. Create a well-stocked pet supply area for your pup, with all the items you’ll need like food, treats, beds, toys, and a leash. Make sure to also puppy-proof your house, just as you would for a small child.
Maltipoos are small dogs that are often categorized as toys or companion pets. They do not typically grow to be more than 20 pounds, which is considered to be on the smaller side for a dog breed. Therefore, Maltipoos cannot be considered as big dogs and they tend to be relatively small in size. Maltipoos are characterized by their thick, puffy hair coats and often have a sweet, friendly disposition. They do well in living in small homes and apartments and have a moderate exercise requirement.
Maltipoos are usually active and playful dogs. They have been bred to combine the best of both their Poodle and Maltese parents: intelligence, athleticism and an overall friendly disposition. As such, regular exercise and play is essential to keep them healthy and happy. Maltipoos are usually quite active indoors, but they also thrive when given the chance to run and play outside. If they don't get enough physical and mental stimulation, they can become destructive and sometimes even anxious. Proper daily exercise and positive training will help keep your Maltipoo active and engaged.
Maltipoos are often ideal family pets as they usually possess the traits of both parent breeds--the Maltese and Poodle--which generally includes being gentle, friendly, and social when properly trained and socialized. When it comes to kids, Maltipoos tend to be a great match, especially when they are raised around children from a young age. They are often affectionate, loyal, and eager to please, and have an easy-going nature.
The amount of exercise that a Maltipoo requires on a daily basis will depend on the individual pup and his or her activity level. Generally speaking, an adult Maltipoo will need around 30-60 minutes of exercise per day. This can include a leisurely walk in the park, active play in a fenced-in backyard, and supervised games of fetch or tug. Exercise is important to keep the pup healthy, both physically and mentally. It is also important to provide mental stimulation for Maltipoos through interactive puzzle toys or other intelligent training activities.
