Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a designer crossbreed, formed by crossing a Maltese and a Poodle. As such, they are not recognized as their own distinct breed; rather, they exist as a hybrid. Maltipoos are known to be highly affectionate and gentle, making them excellent companions for families. They are loyal and easily trained, and enjoy playing and spending time with their owners. Generally, Maltipoos are small, ranging from 4 to 14 pounds and 8 to 14 inches tall. As a relatively low maintenance companion, Maltipoos are a great fit for a variety of families.
Maltipoos are a hybrid breed that generally have a very low to non-shedding coat making them a popular choice for people who have allergies or who want less dog hair around their home. Although the Maltipoo breed is considered to be hypoallergenic, no dog is completely non-allergenic. For those with severe allergies, an F1B Maltipoo could be the best choice. F1B Maltipoos are 75% poodle and 25% Maltese which is the highest hybridization of poodle to a Maltese.
It is important to note that Maltipoos, like all dogs, are not recommended to ingest certain foods that are regularly a part of human diets. Foods that should not be given to Maltipoos include onions, garlic, alcohol, avocados, chocolate, grapes, and raisins. These foods have the potential to cause health problems or even be toxic to Maltipoos. Also, table scraps should be avoided. Table scraps are often not nutritionally balanced for dogs and can lead to weight problems.
Maltipoos do have certain requirements that must be met to ensure they are healthy and happy. Generally, Maltipoos require plenty of socialization and exercise. Regular grooming, including brushing, bathing, and trimming, is essential for this breed as well. To help with socialization, Maltipoos should be exposed to different people, pets, and situations to avoid social anxiety or shyness. In addition, Maltipoos need regular exercise, as this breed can become destructive if they do not receive adequate physical and mental stimulation.
Maltipoos can vary in size as a result of the different sizes of the parent breeds, the toy or teacup Poodle and the Maltese. On average, they can range from 4-14 pounds. They usually reach full adulthood by the age of one but may still continue to grow slightly until they are two years old. Generally, Maltipoos are considered to be on the smaller side of toy breed dogs, with most Maltipoo adults to be around 8-10 inches tall at the shoulder.
Maltipoos are usually very active dogs, and they love to be on the go. They are easily trained and eager to please, which often means that they have plenty of energy that needs to be released. You can typically expect a Maltipoo to be up and about the house, running around and getting into mischief if given the chance. Even if you keep to regular walks and playtime, you can typically count on a Maltipoo to have some extra pep in their step and they usually have plenty of energy to spare.
Generally, Maltipoos get along well with other pets when they are properly introduced and socialized. However, as with all breeds, it is important to carefully assess your Maltipoo's temperament and observe how it interacts with other animals. Having a Maltipoo who is exposed to other animals from a young age will help ensure that they develop positive social behavior and learn to properly get along with other pets.
Training Maltipoos is an important part of owning and caring for them, but it can be difficult to figure out how much time to dedicate to it each day. Generally speaking, you should plan to spend at least 15-20 minutes every day training your Maltipoo, and at least 30 minutes on days when you are introducing a new skill or command. The best way to determine how much time you should spend on training is to observe your pup's energy level and focus.
