Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a breed of hybrid dog that is a mix between a Maltese and a Toy Poodle. They range in size from 5 to 20 pounds and their coat can range from wavy to curly and vary in color as well. They are known for being relatively low-shedding and are considered a hypoallergenic dog breed. This breed is known to be energetic, outgoing, and cuddly and often form strong bonds with their owners. They are also quite intelligent and a relatively easy breed to train. Generally they adapt well to apartment living.
Generally speaking, Maltipoos will not cause an allergic reaction. This is because Maltipoos are considered to be hypoallergenic, meaning that they do not produce enough dander to trigger an allergic reaction. Even though there have been cases of people with Maltipoos having reactions, these instances are quite rare. Potential allergy sufferers should note that there are a couple of factors, beyond breed, that can influence someone's sensitivity to pet dander. These include length of coat, type of food fed, and environment of the home.
Maltipoos are small dogs with unique dietary needs. To ensure the health and well-being of your Maltipoo, it is important to know what not to feed them. Foods to avoid include chocolate, dairy, grapes, raw meat, eggs, onions, and garlic. These types of foods can be toxic to dogs and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and difficulty breathing. Additionally, your Maltipoo should not eat human food high in fat or salt, such as pizza, sausage, bacon, potato chips, nuts, butter, and sandwiches.
Before bringing home a new Maltipoo, it is important to ensure your home is well-prepared. Start by making sure your space is properly pet-proofed. Hide cords, secure loose items, remove any toxic plants or chemicals, and cover up and/or block off any areas you don't want your furry friend getting into. Create a dedicated pet area with toys, food bowls, and a comfortable bed or crate. Also consider creating a safe space in your home that you can open up for your pet when company comes over.
The size of your Maltipoo puppy will depend on the size of its parents. Maltipoos typically reach their full size range anywhere between six and nine months, but can continue to fill out until they are around one year old. On average, Maltipoos weigh 7-10 pounds and grow to be 8-14 inches tall. However, the size of the puppy can vary greatly from this average depending on the particular genetics of the parents, so it is difficult to predict with certainty how large your pup will be when full grown.
Maltipoos, a cross between Maltese and Poodle breeds, generally love to swim. Most enjoy splashing around in the water and with their relatively small size, they can easily be taken to the lake, river or ocean. It's important to note, however, that if your pup's not familiar with water, it's best to start slowly by introducing them to shallower waters and offering treats to reward them. With the right type of guidance and patience, Maltipoos can learn to love the water and swimming.
Maltipoos are generally known to be an affectionate breed that gets along well with most other pets in the home. While it is always possible for any breed to display some aggression, Maltipoos typically form strong bonds with their human companions and show plenty of love for their furry friends too. With proper training and socialization, most Maltipoos will interact politely with other pets, such as cats, doggos, and birds, and may even want to cuddle and play with them.
Training a Maltipoo can be both easy and difficult depending on the individual. They are intelligent animals with an eagerness to please, so tackling the basics is relatively simple. However, because Maltipoos are so energetic, they can be challenging to train and need a lot of mental stimulation and rewards. If you stay consistent, keep training sessions short and provide positive reinforcement, you will find that your Maltipoo responds well, picks up new tricks and behaviors extremely quickly, and is eager to learn more.
