Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a hybrid mixed breed of the Poodle and Maltese breeds. This combination of two classic favorite breeds makes Maltipoos one of the most popular breed mixes in recent years. As a designer breed, Maltipoos can have the fluffy coat of the Poodle or the silky smooth hair of the Maltese. They typically weigh between 4 and 20 pounds and usually measure 8 to 13 inches in height. Maltipoos are friendly, adorable, and can easily become your favorite furry family member. They’re intelligent, devoted, obedient, and loyal.
Maltipoos (a mix between a Maltese and a Poodle) are commonly known for being low-shedding dogs. This desirable trait is due to their generally curly coats, which help to trap loose hair and keep it from spreading around. Typically, they will not shed large amounts, however they will require regular brushing and grooming to ensure their coat does not become matted. It is important to also know that all dogs will shed, even non-shedding breeds, albeit to a lesser degrees.
It is important to feed your Maltipoo a diet that contains a variety of healthy food options. It should contain fresh or canned meat products such as chicken or beef, fish, grains such as oatmeal, rice, or barley, vegetables such as green beans, carrots, and broccoli, and fruit such as apples, bananas, and oranges. Aim for a diet rich in calories, low in fat, and free of artificial preservatives and additives. Monitor your dog’s weight and adjust based upon specific body condition.
To become the best puppy parent for your Maltipoo, there are a few tips you should keep in mind. First, always follow a consistent feeding, potty-training, and exercise schedule to allow your pup to adjust and develop good habits. Be sure to remove all hazardous items in your home that your Maltipoo might get into and provide lots of safe, chew-resistant toys. Ensure your pup is properly socialized and has plenty of opportunities to explore and learn. Regular vet checkups, treatments, and vaccinations are a must for maintaining your pup's health.
Maltipoos come in a variety of sizes, depending on the age and parental breeds. Generally, they are considered "toy" dogs, meaning that when full grown they are generally under about 10 pounds, but some may reach up to 18 pounds. Maltipoos which are bred from Toy Poodles may reach a maximum size of about 4-8 pounds while puppies bred from Miniature Poodles may reach a maximum size of 8-14 pounds.
Maltipoos can enjoy swimming because they belong to a group of dogs that can learn and take instruction quite quickly. Maltipoos are generally quite keen to learn and can be trained to swim with practice and patience. With the right environment, Maltipoos can become very confident swimmers and enjoy their time in the water. However, if your Maltipoo is still a puppy, you should always pay extra attention and care while they’re in the water, as they can tire very quickly and could be at risk of water-borne illnesses.
Maltipoos are commonly considered to be excellent family pets because of their ability to form strong bonds with their owners, their intelligence, and their generally affectionate nature. Maltipoos are known for being very loyal, so once they become a part of your family, expect them to want lots of your attention. They are also very adaptable and adapt well to all kinds of family situations, making them a great option for those who need a calm dog for their family.
Training a Maltipoo should start with basic puppy obedience classes. It is important to begin teaching commands as soon as possible to ensure good behavior and an understanding of boundaries. Ideally you should have an experienced trainer to help you through the process, as it can be a bit overwhelming. Additionally, be sure to be consistent with your instructions, reward good behavior, and keep the lessons short and simple. It's important that you don't overwhelm your pup with too many commands or move forward into more advanced training before they have mastered the basics.
