Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a hybrid breed of cross between a Maltese and a Poodle. They are incredibly smart, affectionate, and gentle dogs that make great family pets. Maltipoos often come in a variety of coat colors, including white, cream, beige, black, brown, and gray. They are usually low-shedding, making them a great choice for those who don't want their home covered with pet fur. Because of their size, Maltipoos are great for apartment living and traveling. They require regular grooming, but they are otherwise low-maintenance dogs.
Maltipoos, like many other breeds of dog, are considered low-shedding and hypoallergenic, although there is no guarantee that an individual dog will not cause an allergic reaction. These traits are a result of breeding them to have a combination of the low-shedding qualities of a Poodle and the non-shedding coat of a Maltese. Although these dogs are usually better tolerated by people with allergies, each allergy sufferer is unique, so it's important to be tested for specific allergens before committing to a dog.
Feeding Maltipoos requires special consideration as they are liable to digestive issues and food sensitivities. Because of their small size, high energy levels and delicate digestive system, it is important to pay attention to the ingredients in their meals. Avoid any processed people food, including milk, cheese, meat, and fish. As tasty as they may be, these foods are not suitable for Maltipoos, as they contain too much fat and saturated fat, and may cause serious digestive problems.
Before making the commitment to getting a Maltipoo, you'll want to ensure you have the necessary items to make your pup feel comfortable. Consider purchasing items such as a cage, food bowl, lead and collar, bed, toys that will help reduce boredom, chewable treats or bones to provide something to chew on besides your items, grooming supplies, cleaning supplies, and a first aid kit. You'll also want to set up a space for your pup so they can feel secure and have a place to retreat when needed.
Maltipoos, which are a combination of Maltese and Poodle breeds, are not considered large dogs. Rather, they are typically toy-sized dogs, falling under the range of 5-20 pounds. That being said, Maltipoos can come in a variety of sizes. Some owners choose to breed two smaller Maltipoos to create smaller puppies, while others may breed standard-sized Poodles with a Maltese to create a larger pup.
The amount of exercise needed for a Maltipoo is very breed and activity-level specific. Generally speaking, a Maltipoo requires around 30 minutes to 1 hour of exercise each day. This amount of exercise can range from brisk walks to playing interactive games with them, such as a game of fetch or tug of war. Do keep in mind that puppies may need more exercise than the average Maltipoo or older dogs may need a bit less than the average.
Maltipoos tend to get along quite well with other animals, provided they are properly introduced and well socialized. Some Maltipoos may have issues with more aggressive pets due to their smaller size and smaller stature, but most Maltipoos will become best friends with cats, birds, and other small animals if given enough time and proper guidance. Maltipoos often are bred to do well with families and since they are quite friendly, they often do a great job of adapting to the particular needs of other animals.
Training your Maltipoo requires love, patience, and lots of positive reinforcement. Start by setting aside a dedicated space for crate training and teaching your pet manners. Using treats, rewards, and positive encouragement, begin teaching basic commands come, sit, down, stay and working on reinforcing context appropriate behaviors. After establishing the basic commands, work on challenging your pup with more advanced obedience exercises like agility or tricks. As you move forward, regularly review the basic commands and behaviors to ensure they remain consistent and reinforced.
