Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a crossbreed between Malteses and Poodles. They are considered to be a hybrid breed of designer dog and are considered to have a unique combination of characteristics from both parent breeds. Maltipoos are typically known for their intelligence, energy, and affection. They generally weigh anywhere from 4 to 14 pounds and can range from anywhere up to 12 inches tall. As Maltipoos' coats are not always the same, their coat can be curly, straight, or somewhere in between.
Maltipoos are considered to be among the most hypoallergenic of dog breeds, due to their combination of two hypoallergenic parent breeds toy or miniature poodles and Maltese. The poodle's low-shedding coats provide the Maltipoo with hypoallergenic qualities, and the Maltese's friendly temperament is often passed on to the offspring. As long as a Maltipoo is groomed on a regular basis and is well-cleaned, allergies to pet dander should not be a concern.
It is important to feed your Maltipoo a healthy and balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs. Foods that should not be given to Maltipoos include chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, bread dough, fatty meat trimmings, and raw meats. These items can be toxic to your Maltipoo and should be avoided. It is best to consult your veterinarian about what is an appropriate food to feed your Maltipoo based on their individual needs and lifestyle.
To prepare your home for your new Maltipoo, start by pet-proofing your home. Remove any items or objects that your pup can chew or swallow, such as electrical cords, small toys, and other hazardous items. You should also make sure that your pup has a safe area to call their own, such as a kennel or sleeping area with toys and bedding. Bring the pup to a vet for a general checkup and vaccinations and make sure they are kept up-to-date on heartworm and flea/tick treatments.
Maltipoos are often thought of as toy dogs due to their small size but they are adorably spunky and can be quite active. Generally, Maltipoos can reach heights of up to 1 foot tall and weigh around 10-20 pounds, making them smaller than most other breeds of dogs. While Maltipoos are not considered large dogs, they still have a significant amount of personality that is often adored by owners. Life span for Maltipoos also tend to be longer compared to other toy-sized breed dogs.
Generally speaking, Maltipoos do enjoy swimming, which can be a great way to give them much-needed daily exercise. As long as they are introduced to the water slowly and correctly, they can learn to love the experience of swimming, and will often take to it naturally. Maltipoos tend to have a low water-retention coat, which helps them to stay dry and relatively warm while swimming, and its low-maintenance nature also means they can often go for only a short time between needing trims or shampoos.
Maltipoos are an excellent breed for first-time owners! Their playful and loving personalities make them easy to train, and their small size allows them to fit into a variety of living situations from apartments to homes. They're an ideal pup for people who live in cities or have limited space for larger dogs. Additionally, their low-shedding coats mean that they require less grooming and maintenance. Maltipoos can be a bit of a challenge to potty-train though, so introducing them to a consistent routine early on is key.
Training a Maltipoo can be both easy and challenging depending on the individual pup. While they are generally eager to please, they can become easily distracted, so it is important to be consistent with the training and set achievable goals. The best way to start training a Maltipoo is with positive reinforcement. Praise them for small wins such as properly sitting, responding to their name, or walking on a leash. Maltipoos are usually very food motivated, so treats can also be used as a reward during training sessions.
