Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a designer dog breed, a mix between a Maltese and a Poodle. They are usually small to medium in size, rarely exceeding 20 lbs. Maltipoos are known to be very intelligent, loyal, loving and sociable animals that make fantastic family dogs. They have low-to-non shedding coats that come in a variety of colors. They require daily exercise, such as walks and running. They also need to be groomed regularly to keep their coats from matting. Maltipoos have a long life span, usually about 12 to 14 years.
Maltipoos, which are a mix between a Maltese and Poodle, can sometimes be hypoallergenic. It really depends on the genetics of the individual dog, as every dog's coat is different. Hypoallergenic dogs produce less dander, which is what triggers allergies in some people. To help make sure you don't react to the dog's dander, it's important to talk to the breeder and see the mother and father of the Maltipoo to identify if either of the parent dogs is hypoallergenic.
Maltipoos, a crossbred of a Maltese and a Poodle, are playful dogs who require the right diet to stay healthy and active. As such, they should be fed a high-quality, nutritionally balanced diet consisting of meats, grains, and vegetables. During adulthood, depending on activities and health issues, you should feed your Maltipoo between one-half and one cup of dry kibble per day, split into two smaller meals.
Preparing for your new Maltipoo involves both preparing your home environment and yourself. First, make sure you have all the necessary items like food and water bowls, toys, a bed or cozy resting spot, grooming brush, chew items, and collar and leash. You should also create an appropriate space for your new pup, such as a crate, part of a room, or secured area. Next, it's important to have your pet checked by a veterinarian and up to date on vaccinations, if not already done, and set up regular checkups to keep them healthy.
Maltipoos come in a range of sizes, from as small as 4 pounds to as big as 20 pounds, depending on the size of the parents of the puppy. Though these toy or teacup dogs are mostly kept as companion pets, there are also larger Maltipoos that could also be suitable for light activity. Size variation is also impacted by the ratio of Toy Poodle to Maltese used in the breed. Dogs bred for a smaller size will generally weigh less.
Maltipoos generally enjoy playing in the water; however, some may take a bit more convincing than others to take the plunge. Generally Maltipoos inherit the Poodle's love for water, meaning many of them would naturally take to the water. Some owners will introduce their Maltipoos to swimming and, once accustomed to it, most Maltipoos enjoy being in the water, either in a pool or any other type of body water.
Maltipoos are great companions for children, as they are a gentle and friendly breed. Maltipoos have a natural affection for people, especially children, and they thrive in social situations with youth. Maltipoos love to play and often enjoy participating in the same activities as kids. They typically have a high tolerance for children's curiosity. Maltipoos are very loyal and will often follow their young companion around or curl up beside them when they're feeling sleepy.
Training a Maltipoo is not necessarily an easy task, but with patience and consistency, it can certainly be accomplished. Since Maltipoos can be a bit more willful than some other breeds, it is important to establish ground rules right away. When training is begun early, it is significantly easier to work off of a puppy's natural tendencies making the training process more successful. With an adult Maltipoo, training any learned behaviors can take more effort. Both adults and puppies will benefit from positive reinforcement and the use of rewards to encourage good behaviors.
