Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a cross breed of two popular breeds -poodles and Maltese. They are considered designer breeds and therefore have characteristics from both the parent breeds, generally a combination of Maltese's intelligence and Poodle's hypoallergenic coat. Maltipoos typically weigh between three to fourteen pounds and are considered to be a toy-size breed of dog. In addition, Maltipoos are generally easy to train, loyal, and have a lot of energy and affection.
Maltipoos have a exceptionally soft and fluffy coat that typically ranges in color from white to cream and shades of brown, gray, and black. The texture of a Maltipoo's hair is usually denser and thicker than a regular Poodle's coat, giving them a plush and cuddly look. Depending on the parents' coats, your Maltipoo may have a silky waves, tight curls, or somewhere in between. The hair is also non-shedding, often minimal if any, which makes them a great choice for those with allergies.
Maltipoos typically have small stomachs and digestive systems, so giving them high-calorie, unhealthy treats, such as people food, should be avoided. They should not be fed table scraps, chocolate, candy, nuts, acidic foods, rawhide, salty snacks or canned fish as their nutritional needs are better met by specially formulated dog foods. Some human foods such as garlic, onions, raw eggs, and grapes can be especially hazardous to Maltipoos, and dairy products can cause digestive problems.
Making sure your home is prepared for your new Maltipoo is important before you bring them in. First, be sure to puppy-proof your living area as much as possible by either moving furnishings around, or investing in furniture covers if needed. You'll want to also consider installing baby gates to keep them out of specific rooms like the bedroom. It's important to get all the necessary items for your Maltipoo's care ahead of time such as a food and water bowl, comfortable bed, leash and collar, treats, toys, flea and tick medication, and nail clippers.
Maltipoos typically range from 4 to 10 pounds in size and stand around 8 to 14 inches tall at the shoulder. It is hard to determine how big they will be as adults because Maltipoos have a variety of possible parents and can have unpredictable variations in size. Generally, breeders use Maltese and Toy Poodle parents to breed Maltipoos, but they can also be bred from Miniature Poodle and Maltese parents. The size of a Maltipoo fully grown is dependant on which of the two parent breeds is used for breeding.
