Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a hybrid/crossbreed dog, combining a Maltese and Poodle to create a devoted, affectionate and lively family pet. These dogs are considered to be in the non-sporting group of dogs, as their size, coat and intelligence vary from litter to litter, depending on the breeding of their line. Maltipoos are small-to-medium dogs who range in weight from 4 to 20 pounds, with a silky, wavy coat that typically ranges from light apricot to white.
Maltipoos are often believed to be hypoallergenic because of their hybrid-Poodle coat, but in reality this trait is not guaranteed. The amount of allergens produced by these dogs can vary by individual, more so than purebreds, since their genetic makeup is not fixed like that of a purebred. That said, many people who are allergic to pet dander find that their Maltipoo causes less of a reaction than other breeds thanks to its coat.
Maltipoos should not be fed table scraps or human junk food such as candy, chips, and fried foods. These foods are too high in fat and calories which can cause weight gain, along with various health problems. They should also not consume chocolate, grapes or raisins, as these foods can be toxic to them. Instead, they should eat a balanced diet of high-quality dry, wet, and canned food specifically formulated for their size and dietary needs.
Maltipoo dogs do have some special requirements. As a crossbreed, they are considered higher-maintenance than regular purebreds. This means they need more time and attention, with lots of quality playtime and love. They are also prone to separation anxiety, so they need a home where someone will be around them most of the time. As for diet, Maltipoo are known to have food sensitivities, so special attention must be paid to which foods they eat; fresh foods and natural dog foods should always be the mainstay of their diet.
Maltipoos are not considered big dogs, as they are a crossbreed between a Maltese and a Toy Poodle, both of which are fairly petite. Depending on the size of the Poodle parent, Maltipoos can have a height range of 6-14 inches and a weight range between 6 to 20 pounds. Comparatively, these sizes are significantly smaller than the typical range of sizes for most large breed dogs. Maltipoos may appear to have a bigger size due to their big eyes, ears, and round head which is proportionately larger than their body size.
Depending on your Maltipoo's age and lifestyle, it is generally recommended to walk them for at least 30 minutes per day. However, if your pup is younger and still in their learning stages, you may want to start with 15 minutes and slowly work your way up. If your pup is an older one, it is advised to increase the walk time to 60 minutes. Remember that your Maltipoo need stimulation and physical activity to stay healthy and happy.
Generally, Maltipoos make excellent companions for children of all ages. Not only are they loving and affectionate dogs, but they're also gentle and very patient. Maltipoos can offer kids endless hours of joy as they cuddle and play together. Since they're small in stature, they can even make good travel companions for kids on car trips, field trips, etc. Maltipoos do require regular grooming and lots of daily attention, making them perfect for older, responsible kids.
Training a Maltipoo requires plenty of patience and understanding. It's important to start with basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and down. You may need to spend some time teaching your pup proper socialization and housebreaking, too. Depending on your pup's age, you may want to invest in a few potty-training pads to get them used to doing their business outside. During training sessions, keep them short and sweet and give your pup lots of positive reinforcement with treats and verbal praise. Ensure their environment is clear of any distractions so their full attention is on the task.
