Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a designer breed that are considered to be great family pets. They are a mix between a Maltese and Poodle, and tend to be loving, intelligent, and easily trainable. This breed is usually low-shedding, making them a great companion if you have allergies. Maltipoos need regular grooming, as their coat can grow quickly and may require regular brushing and clipping. Exercise-wise, they should be taken on regular walks, or played with in some way each day to keep them physically active.
The Maltipoo coat can be quite varied depending on what coat type it is. Generally the coats are soft and silky and may contain both curling and wavy fur. The coat can range from white, beige, cream, silver, slate, and tan colors, as well as some have black tips. They can also come with various coat patterns--either a single color with two tone points, or a triple color mix. Maltipoos tend to have a low to no shedding coat which makes them a great breed for those who suffer from allergies.
It's best to avoid feeding Maltipoos human foods, table scraps, and foods high in fat, sugar, or additives. The ideal diet for a Maltipoo is one full of nutritious, well-balanced ingredients, such as lean protein, vegetables, and whole grains. Certain foods can be dangerous for Maltipoos, such as grapes, raisins, chocolates, and nuts. Feeding these can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or worse. Uncooked bones are also extremely dangerous for Maltipoos as they can splinter and result in internal injury.
Preparing for a new Maltipoo can seem like a daunting task, but with the right planning and research, you'll be ready in no time. Start with stocking up on all the necessary items you will need to make your Maltipoo comfortable, such as a leash, collar, bowls, food, bed, and toys. Also establish a routine to keep your Maltipoo active, such as daily walks and plenty of playtime. Training is also an important step in preparing your pet for its new home.
The size of your Maltipoo puppy will depend on its genetic makeup, which varies between different litters. Generally, however, Maltipoos typically weigh between 4 and 14 pounds when fully grown, though it's important to note that the size can depend on which of its parent breeds – poodle and Maltese – it takes after. On the smaller end of the spectrum, the Maltipoo could reach just 4 pounds when mature, while on the larger size it could reach up to 14 pounds.
The amount of exercise any individual pet needs will depend on its age, breed, and overall health. Generally speaking, a Maltipoo will benefit from being taken on a moderate walk each day. It's recommended to spend at least 20 minutes per walk and a total of at least 40 minutes per day exercising your Maltipoo. In addition to daily walks, other forms of exercise, such as playing fetch in the yard or practicing obedience commands, can be used to increase the amount of time spent exercising your pet per day to reach an approximate total of 50 minutes.
Maltipoos are great family dogs! A combination of the Maltese and Poodle breeds, they are known for their intelligence, loving personalities, and energetic nature. These playful pups are a great fit for active families and those that have smaller spaces. Maltipoos can adapt to various living environments and will require regular exercise and socialization. Their adaptable, friendly nature makes them an ideal companion for single people and families with children. Furthermore, Maltipoos are hypoallergenic and require minimal grooming.
Training your Maltipoo is not rocket science—it just requires dedication, patience, and understanding. Start by creating a positive training environment by offering rewards, like special treats, toys, or verbal praise, after positive behaviors to encourage repetition. Additionally, insure that during training sessions you are calm and collected, since your energy will be projected onto your pup. Then, focus on basic commands like “sit”, “come”, and “stay”.
