Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a unique hybrid of the Toy or Miniature Poodle and the Maltese. This cross-breed is a popular choice for many dog owners. As a designer breed, Maltipoos are intelligent, active, and loving companions. These dogs vary in size, but are usually between 8 and 20 inches in height and weigh between 7 and 15 pounds. Although they may appear similar to a lapdog, Maltipoos often have a sporty attitude and can enjoy outdoor activities.
Maltipoos, as a hybrid breed, vary, but most tend to have hypoallergenic qualities. The Poodle parent, known to produce low levels of dander, and the Maltese parent, naturally predisposed to produce little to no dander, make this hybrid breed an ideal pet for those who may suffer from allergies. However, there is no guarantee as all Maltipoos are not completely hypoallergenic. Some still may produce some dander depending on the traits they inherit from their parents.
When looking for the best dog food for your Maltipoo, it's important to consider their particular dietary needs. They are a small and active dog breed, so any dry or wet food should emphasize whole grains, animal proteins, and a moderate fat content. Additionally, you should look for a food that is designed for small-breed dogs since it will feature smaller kibble sizes. Additionally, vitamins and minerals should be clearly labeled, such as omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for a healthy coat.
To properly prepare your home for a new Maltipoo, make sure you have all the necessary supplies. This includes a bed or crate, food and water bowls, a collar and matching leash, and toys. It's a good idea to block access to any areas of your home where your pet can't be supervised, such as the basement or rooms with furniture that might get ruined. Puppy-proofing is also important remove any hazards that may be dangerous for a small pet, such as sharp objects and electronic cords.
Maltipoos come in a variety of sizes ranging from very tiny sizes such as teacup to larger sizes that could weigh up to 20 lbs or more. Some Maltipoos will grow up to be 4-6 pounds while others can be 8-14 pounds. Generally, the size of your Maltipoo will depend on the types of breeds that were used in the original cross-breeding. For instance, toy size poodles could yield a tiny Maltipoo while a standard size poodle may yield a larger Maltipoo.
Generally, most Maltipoo breeds need about 30-45 minutes of exercise every day. This exercise should be split into multiple shorter walks, ideally twice a day. For a healthy Maltipoo, there should be an average of 15-20 minutes of walking during each of these walks. Allowing them to run off-leash in a safe, fenced-in area for a few minutes can also provide them with beneficial exercise. If your Maltipoo is particularly active and loves to run and play, then you may want to increase the amount of exercise time each day.
Maltipoos are known as excellent family dogs, offering both a great companion for children and a loyal protector of their human family. Maltipoos have lovable personalities, which make them the perfect choice for busy households. They have a high energy level that is well suited to a family life, and they are also incredibly intelligent, making them easy to train. They are very affectionate, earning them a reputation as perfect lapdogs. Maltipoos are also quite social and make great playmates for children, as well as other pets, like cats.
Training your Maltipoo can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. To begin, it's important to create a routine and stick to it to ensure your pup understands what you expect of them. Start with simple commands and reward your pet with treats when they obey. Provide lots of positive reinforcement when teaching new behaviors and develop a cue word or phrase for each trick such as "sit" and "stay". Additionally, be sure to incorporate commands like "come" since they can be used to prevent your pup from dashing out the door or engaging with a stranger.
