Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a cross between a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Known for their charming personalities and friendly dispositions, they make great family pets. Maltipoos are alert, intelligent, and easy to train, making them wonderful companions for children and adults alike. They are typically a low to non-shedding breed, and they come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. Maltipoos can be anywhere from 4-14 pounds on average, with some as large as 20 pounds.
Maltipoos have a soft, moderately long coat typically made up of both their Poodle and Maltese parent breeds' fur. It has an abundance of non-shedding curls and waves which makes it a perfect fit for people with allergies. Depending on their parents, a Maltipoo's coat can range from straight to curly, be soft or coarse, and range in colours such as white, off-white, apricot, black, brown, gray and silver. Grooming will be required, but the amount depends on the desired length of the coat.
Maltipoos typically do not have any special dietary needs, however, depending on their age, size, and health, you may need to tailor their diet to meet their specific needs. As puppies, they may need meal plans higher in protein that are formulated for rapid growth and development. As adults, they may require a different diet that is higher in minerals and vitamins. If health issues arise, your veterinarian may prescribe a special diet plan tailored to meet your Maltipoo's specific needs or allergen sensitivities.
Preparing your home for a new Maltipoo is an exciting and important task. First, ensure that your home is safe and secure for a lively dog. Make sure all electrical cords and outlets are out of reach, and consider setting up barricades to guide your new pup away from areas off-limits. Secondly, if you plan to crate-train your dog, set up an appropriate sized crate in an area that your pet will not be disturbed. Make sure the area is quiet and that the crate is lined with a comfortable blanket for resting.
Maltipoos are generally considered to be smallto medium-sized dogs. Their exact size and weight vary depending on their parent breeds. Maltipoos typically reach a height between 8-14 inches and a weight between 6-20 pounds. While they are not what would typically be considered "big" dogs, they are certainly larger than some toy breeds such as Chihuahuas or Yorkies and can provide good companionship for those seeking a slightly bigger companion.
Maltipoos are quite active dogs that tend to require a good amount of physical and mental stimulation. While their exercise needs can vary depending on age, size, and general health, most Maltipoos need a fair amount of activity each day in order to stay happy and healthy. They tend to need daily walks and playtime, and a Maltipoo that is left alone with no physical or mental stimulation will quickly become destructive.
Maltipoos are excellent with children. They are an incredibly loving breed that thrives in family environments, making them the perfect choice for households with young children. They are highly intelligent, known for their eagerness to please, and make excellent, loyal companions for all ages. Maltipoos also have a tendency to become overly excited when kids are around, making them the ideal playmate. They have a non-shedding coat – which may require the occasional trimming – and have an easy to please nature, making them a great choice for first-time pet owners.
Training a Maltipoo requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Start with a basic obedience training course for puppies and build upon that. You'll want to socialize them with other dogs and people, slowly introducing them to new experiences. When teaching commands, be sure to reward your dog with treats and lots of praise when they have been successful. Use firm, but not stern, language when giving commands and make sure to treat mistakes as learning opportunities rather than punishments. During training, keep the sessions short and frequent to allow your pup to focus on the task at hand without feeling overwhelmed.
