Questions & Answers
A Maltipoo is a hybrid cross-breed dog that is created by crossing a Maltese with a Miniature or Toy Poodle. While not a purebreed, the combination of these two breeds has created an incredibly popular companion dog that boasts hybrid vigor and is ideal for those with pet allergies. Maltipoos come in a variety of sizes and colors, typically ranging from about 6 to 14 inches tall and 9 to 16 pounds in weight. As these dogs are not officially recognized by the American Kennel Club, registration cannot be done.
Maltipoos, or Maltese-Poodle mixes, are known for being low-shedding dogs. Although their coats are silky and can grow long, they don't usually shed much. Maltipoos typically require regular grooming to keep their locks full and fluffy, but the minimal shedding makes the process relatively easy. Some owners even opt to keep their pup's fur shorter for easier maintenance. Though they may lose a few strands here and there, the low-shedding Maltipoo remains a great option for pet owners who don't want to deal with copious amounts of hair.
Maltipoos are small, playful dogs that usually love to eat just about anything. However, there are some things that you should never feed your Maltipoo -many of these can be harmful to your pup's health. Table scraps, onions, garlic, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, chocolates and caffeine are examples of human food that can be potentially toxic for your Maltipoo.
To have the best experience with your new Maltipoo, it's important to be prepared for its arrival. First, research all the items that are necessary for owning a Maltipoo, such as a collar, leash, food, toys, bed, brush, and any other items you might need. Second, be sure you have a proper understanding of the Maltipoo breed. Learn their needs, temperament, and any potential medical conditions or other issues they may be prone to. Third, form an appropriate schedule for your Maltipoo to get used to.
The size of a Maltipoo puppy varies depending on the parents' size, but the average size of a Maltipoo puppy is usually about 9-14 inches tall and can weigh between 5-20 pounds. Keep in mind that if both parents are small, the puppy is likely to remain small, and if both parents are of a larger size, the puppy could grow a bit larger. Generally, Maltipoos will reach their full size around one year of age, however some can take until they are two years old.
Maltipoos tend to require regular physical activity to remain healthy and happy. How much exercise they need depends on their age and energy younger, more active dogs will need more exercise than older, less active dogs. Generally speaking, Maltipoos will benefit from a long walk or jog each day, as well as several short play sessions. It's also important to provide them with plenty of mental stimulation, such as obedience or agility training. If possible, it's best to exercise your Maltipoo in a confined area with supervision, as they can be prone to chase after small critters.
Maltipoos are generally an excellent choice for family living, especially for those families who include kids. As a crossbreed of a Maltese and a Toy Poodle, they are known for having an intelligent, eager-to-please personality and mild disposition. Maltipoos are both loving and tolerant, which makes them great playmates for children. They usually develop strong bonds with their owners and enjoy the attention of parents and kids alike. They are typically energetic, affectionate, and loyal pets that prefer being part of a family, so they are an ideal choice for interacting with children.
Absolutely, Maltipoos are definitely amongst the smartest of all the designer breeds. They thrive on learning new things and are not afraid to show their creative side when it comes to problem solving. With the combination of Maltese and Toy Poodle being both so intelligent, the offspring of the two turn out to be exceptionally smart dogs. Given a positive and patient training environment, they can easily learn basic to complex commands, as well as a variety of fun tricks. These social creatures are also great problem solvers and adapt quickly to new environments, which is certainly a trait of an intelligent pup.
