Questions & Answers
A Maltipoo is a hybrid breed resulting from a cross between a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. This breed originated in the United States some time in the early 2000s and is now popular worldwide as a companion and family pet. Maltipoos are friendly and lively dogs, usually weighing between 6 and 10 pounds. These dogs have a moderate energy level and do best when they have regular mental and physical exercise. They have a soft and curly coat that is usually white, cream, or apricot, and requires regular brushing to prevent tangles.
Maltipoos have a hypoallergenic coat, which often leads people to assume that they are hypoallergenic. However, a hypoallergenic coat does not automatically make a dog hypoallergenic. The only way to know for sure if a Maltipoo is hypoallergenic is to have an allergist complete an allergy test. If the test indicates that there is an allergy to the Maltipoo, then that particular dog may not be a good fit for a person suffering from allergies.
Maltipoos do not have any special dietary needs beyond what is necessary for a healthy diet for all dogs. Generally, Maltipoos do best when they are fed a high-quality, high-protein diet that is rich in vegetables, grains, and fats. It is important to provide a well-balanced mix of vitamins and minerals that are aligned with the recommended daily allowance for any dog.
To ensure your home is prepared for your new Maltipoo, start by puppy-proofing the area. This means moving any hazardous items, such as plants or electrical cords, out of reach and organizing any clutter. Next, create an area for your pup with comfortable bedding, water and food bowls, and toys. Additionally, plan your potty-training strategy ahead of time since Maltipoos can be difficult to housebreak due to their small size. Lastly, make sure to take your Maltipoo to the vet for a checkup and regular vaccinations.
Maltipoos come in a variety of sizes, ranging from the very small to the very large. The smallest Maltipoos will usually be around four to six pounds, while the larger ones can be anywhere from fifteen to twenty pounds. Depending on the size of the parent toy or miniature poodle, the size of the Maltipoo can vary significantly. Generally speaking, Maltipoos tend to be in the middle of the size range, somewhere between about seven to fourteen pounds. It is also important to note that male Maltipoos tend to be gradually larger than females of the same age.
The amount of daily exercise recommended for a Maltipoo varies depending on age, activity level, and size of the pup. Generally, a few minutes of walking a day should suffice, but aim for up to an hour of physical activity (e.g. walking, playing, etc.). If your Maltipoo is younger, you should aim for 25-45 minutes of activities spread out throughout the day. As they get older it's recommended that longer, more concentrated bouts of walking or running should be part of their routine closer to 45-60 minutes a day.
Maltipoos are typically friendly around kids and other animals, with patience and good discipline from their guardians, they can certainly become wonderful family pets. They are highly intelligent and make great watchdogs due to their alert nature but tend to be more on the quiet side. Maltipoos are known for being especially fond of children, often offering them lots of love and kisses. They tend to be quite loyal and are devoted to their humans, so it's likely that they will form strong bonds with any children they live with.
Training a Maltipoo can be a rewarding experience for both pet-parent and pup. Since Maltipoos are known to be intelligent, they often learn quickly—but they do best with positive reinforcement. Start by keeping sessions short (usually 15 to 20 minutes) and fun for both you and your pup. It's also important to remain consistent with commands so that your Maltipoo knows what to expect from you. Break down complex tasks into simple steps and reward good behaviors with treats and encourages.
