Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a small breed of hybrid dog, created by crossing the Maltese with a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Characterized as loyal, intelligent and ranging from 8 to 10 inches in height at the shoulder, these dogs don't have any truly registering pedigree and instead are considered one of the "designer dogs" that have been bred in recent decades. Their coats can range from a wavy to a straight texture and usually require a good brushing several times a week; colors may be black, apricot, reddish or white.
Maltipoos, or Maltese-Poodle crosses, are generally considered to be low shedders. Although they will shed some, it won't be excessive and mainly consist of only their undercoat. They have a high hypoallergenic variation due to their hybrid mix, so less dander and fur are released into the air. The non-shedding coat of a Maltipoo requires regular brushing, and they should be groomed every 8 to 12 weeks to keep a manageable coat.
Maltipoos can be fed a variety of things depending on their age and size. Generally, a diet consisting of high-quality, protein-rich dry kibble with additional wet food or canned food is recommended for adult Maltipoos. Fresh fruits and vegetables can provide added vitamins and minerals, while treats should be fed in moderation. If unsure of your Maltipoo's dietary needs, always consult your veterinarian for specific dietary advice. Additionally, appropriate portion sizes for your dog's size and energy needs will need to be taken into consideration.
Maltipoo are known to be very adaptable, so they do not have a lot of special requirements. That being said, they do need love and attention and they will thrive when they get that. They also need a good amount of exercise, as well as a healthy, balanced diet in order to stay happy and healthy. Since Maltipoos are known to love to learn, they can benefit from training and interactive activities. Regular brushing is also recommended to help ensure the health of their coat.
Maltipoos are indeed considered small dogs, with an adult typically weighing between six to nine pounds. They are a mix of a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle, and can take physical characteristics from either parent. They have compact bodies and smaller-than-average front and back legs when compared to a traditional-sized pooch, making them easy to manage and carry around. Additionally, their small size means they require less food and exercise, both of which contribute to their lower cost of ownership.
Maltipoos are an active breed of designer dog that need regular exercise to stay healthy and fit. The amount of exercise they need will depend on their age, size, and health. Generally, younger Maltipoos should get approximately 30 minutes of exercise a day. Older Maltipoos will need less, approximately 15 minutes. When first starting out, it's important to not overdue it, gradually increase the amount of exercise as they build up their stamina. Exercise can be done with walks, runs, playing fetch, or agility exercises.
Maltipoos are an excellent choice for family pets! Not only are they gentle and loving, but they are also low-maintenance and smart. They typically have a friendly attitude towards everyone they meet and crave human interaction. Maltipoos thrive on socialization, which makes them great in family settings, as they are not shy around kids or other animals. They are affectionate and thrive off of affection and attention. Their small size and low energy level also makes them a great family dog, as they adapt their activity level to fit the family's needs.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training your Maltipoo each day will depend on several factors, such as their age and temperament. Generally, a good rule of thumb is to dedicate 10-20 minutes daily for basic obedience training. During this time you can focus on commands such as sit, stay, come, and heel. Additionally, it is important to set aside some time each day for activities that keep your dog mentally stimulated and engaged. This could include puzzle games, training games, and playtime.
