Questions & Answers
A Maltipoo is a hybrid breed of dog created by crossing a Maltese and a Poodle. These dogs are intelligent, friendly and have a nearly hypoallergenic coat. As far as size goes, they are typically smaller than the average dog, and depending on their parentage can weigh anywhere from five to twenty pounds. The Maltipoo is an adaptable breed and can do well in both city and country living. They are usually full of energy, eager to please their owners, and have a moderate activity level.
Maltipoos, a hybrid cross between a Maltese and a Poodle, have their own unique traits and characteristics. Generally speaking, they may be hypoallergenic, but this depends on the individual genetic makeup of each particular dog. Some Maltipoos may be hypoallergenic due to the higher number of non-shedding genes they have inherited from their parents. However, while several Maltipoos can be non-shedding and considered hypoallergenic, genetics alone do not guarantee this will be the case for any given dog.
It is generally not recommended to feed Maltipoos human food, as it can often lead to digestive issues. Bad human food choices for Maltipoos include anything with high-fat content, like most snacks or fast food, as well as anything containing caffeine, inflammation-causing oils, and high-sugar items such as candy and baked goods. Additionally, feeding a Maltipoo table scraps is also not recommended, as it can lead to obesity and other health problems.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Maltipoo requires being proactive, committed, and enthusiastic throughout the entire process. The most important step to take is spending time with your dog to get to know their personality to understand what their needs are. Making sure to feed your Maltipoo a nutritious and balanced diet is critical, as well as providing plenty of exercise, playtime, and positive reinforcement. Socializing your dog early on with people and other animals will also help them get familiar with their environment.
Maltipoos are considered small dogs. They typically weigh between 4-15 pounds and are just 8-14 inches tall at the shoulder. Maltipoos typically appear much larger than they are due to their long, fluffy coats which can give them a bigger appearance. While they are very loving and affectionate, these small pooches aren't known for their size, but rather for their intelligence. They are energetic and quick-witted, making them great companion dogs. Given their small stature, they are also the perfect pooch for owners who live in apartments and have limited space.
It is possible to take your Maltipoo running, however it is important to ensure their safety and that they remain comfortable. Consider speaking with your veterinarian to make sure that your Maltipoo is healthy enough to exercise and to get advice on the safest way to include running into their regular exercise routine. Make sure to give your Maltipoo plenty of breaks throughout the run and be sure to check for signals that they may need to stop such as excessive panting, drooping ears, and a reluctance to keep going.
Maltipoos have a reputation for being excellent family dogs due to their characteristic gentle, loving and loyal nature. They are gentle and patient around small children, extremely loving and affectionate with all members of the family, and overall have a playful and loyal attitude towards their owners. As such, Maltipoos make wonderful companions for families as they are just as happy in a larger family group as they are when living with only a single person. They are highly intelligent and quite easy to train, which makes them good for both inside and outside house activities.
The amount of daily exercise your Maltipoo needs depends on several factors, such as age, health, size, and breed type. Generally speaking, an adult Maltipoo should get around 30 minutes to an hour of moderate exercise per day. However, puppies will require more time and should be taken out for longer walks or play sessions. You can also combine your Maltipoo's exercise with some mental stimulation, such as training sessions, fetch, and hide-and-seek, to keep them physically and mentally active.
