Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a cross between a Maltese and a toy or miniature size Poodle. They are considered to be a very intelligent designer breed. They can range in size from 4 to 20 lbs when full grown, so they make great companions if you're looking for a small dog. Maltipoos are known for being loyal, playful, and affectionate, which makes them great with kids of all ages. They do need regular exercise, daily brushing, and occasional trips to the groomer, but the rewards for providing these things are a lifetime of unconditional love.
Generally, Maltipoos are considered hypoallergenic, meaning those who are allergic to pet dander and pet saliva may find them to be good breeds for those with allergies. However, there are no guarantees in regards to allergies and reactions to dogs and their fur/dander. If you are prone to allergies, it is recommended to reach out to a veterinary dermatologist or allergist to discuss possible solutions. Additionally, it is advisable to meet a few Maltipoos ahead of making a commitment to ensure tolerance and comfort while around the breed.
Feeding your Maltipoo should be based on their dietary needs, age, and activity level. A nutritional kibble that is designed specifically for small breeds, like the Maltipoo, is essential. A high-quality diet that is rich in proteins, essential fatty acids, and other important vitamins is a key part of helping your little dog get all the nutrition they need. Feeding the correct amount of food is also important, so make sure to work with your vet to create a meal plan that suits your dog’s size and energy level.
Before bringing your new Maltipoo home, it's important to make sure your home is sufficiently prepared, so that your pup can settle in comfortably. Start by making sure your home is safe for your pup. This might involve putting away any hazardous items, such as cleaning supplies, that they could get into. Make sure to puppy-proof your home as much as possible as they explore, as pups are very curious. Furniture should be secured to the wall if necessary. To make your new Maltipoo comfortable, provide a bed, toys, and energy-inducing play items.
Maltipoos are small dogs, not generally considered to be 'big'. The Maltipoo is a mix of a Maltese and a Poodle, and both of these breeds are on the smaller side. Adult Maltipoos typically reach a maximum size of about 12-14 inches in height, and often weigh less than 20lbs. Because they are small, Maltipoos don't require a ton of exercise, and usually are content with short walks and occasional trips to the park.
Maltipoos are known to be excellent swimmers – some of them may even show an affinity for water! The breed is a cross of two active and intelligent breeds, the Maltese and the Toy Poodle, and so they often inherit the love of water from both parents. A Maltipoo's breed characteristics, size, and coat type will all factor into whether a certain Maltipoo likes to swim. Maltipoos with a slightly longer coat may need a wetsuit or jacket in colder water, as their coat can absorb and hold the coolness of the water.
Generally, Maltipoos have a friendly disposition and get along well with other animals such as cats and other dogs. However, it is important to carefully consider whether introducing a Maltipoo to your existing pet is the right decision or not, as Maltipoos can be quite vocal and require a lot of attention and training. It is also a good idea to carefully supervise and monitor the interaction between the Maltipoo and any other pets you may have, to ensure that it is a positive experience for both animals, especially if one is dominant.
Training a Maltipoo requires patience and consistency. Start by familiarizing your pup with basic obedience commands such as 'sit', 'stay', 'come', and 'heel'. Treats or positive reinforcement can be used as rewards for good behavior. Aim to keep training sessions short but frequent. Make sure to have plenty of treats or toys on hand to help keep your pup engaged. Set a schedule for training and stick to it. Also, take time to socialize your pup as Maltipoos thrive in positive relationships. Find activities that you and your pup can both enjoy.
