Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a hybrid breed of small-sized dogs created by crossing a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Despite their small size, Maltipoos are known for being wonderfully affectionate and loyal companions while at the same time being relatively easy-to-train. They are also known as being very intelligent companions that are able to adapt to nearly any type of homelife. Maltipoos are usually known for having a moderate energy level, generally appearing very non-aggressive and loving towards those around them.
The face of a Maltipoo is usually quite scruffy, but the body is usually covered with a long, silky coat. The Maltipoo's coat may vary from curly to straight depending upon the generations of breeding, but almost all will boast a unique texture composed of both poodle and Maltese hair. The Maltipoo coat is also quite low-shedding and odourless, which is why it is often seen as a hypoallergenic breed.
Maltipoos are small dogs with hybrid ancestry, and as a result of their parent breeds' genetic makeup, they can have certain dietary needs. On average, a Maltipoo should receive high-quality, nutrient-packed kibble that caters to their size and activity level. It is essential to provide them with a balanced diet that consists of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals to ensure they receive all the nutrients they need. Additionally, providing your Maltipoo with fresh and/or frozen fruits and vegetables is a great way to increase their fiber and mineral intake.
Before getting a Maltipoo, you should consider purchasing a few essentials. Dog food, a food bowl, a collar and leash, a bed, a crate, toys, treats, and quality shampoo should all be on your list. Additionally, you may want to stock up on chew toys to keep your pup from chewing on inappropriate items. Grooming items, such as brushes, combs, and nail trimmers, may also come in handy. Safety items, such as a checkup at the vet and identification tags, are must-haves as well.
Maltipoos, also known as a Maltese-Poodle mix, come in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. The size of the Maltipoo depends on the size of the parent breeds, with the toy variety being the smallest and the standard being the largest. The toy Maltipoo is typically 8-14 inches in height and 4-8 pounds in weight. The miniature variety stands at 11-14 inches tall and 9-15 pounds in weight, and the standard is 14-18 inches tall and 15-25 pounds in weight.
Although Maltipoos have the typical Maltese and Poodle personality traits, each pup is unique and may have different preferences. Generally, most Maltipoos are water-friendly and enjoy taking a dip in the pool or paddling around in the lake. More importantly, it can be quite beneficial for the pup's physical and mental health to exercise and stay active in the water. Maltipoos who are acclimated to water from a young age are the happiest and healthiest canines. Swimming is low-impact, non-weight bearing, and aids in whole-body strengthening.
Typically, Maltipoos have a great temperament that makes them great companions for kids. They are a mix of both the Maltese and the Poodle and often exhibit characteristics of both. Maltipoos are generally very friendly and affectionate, and they love to be around people. They are often good natured and enjoy keeping children entertained with their playful antics. They usually get along very well with children, as long as boundaries are set.
Training your Maltipoo should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for both you and your pup. To start, find a consistent command to use to tell them what behavior you are looking for. It is important to only use this command, as changing commands too often can confuse your Maltipoo. Additionally, aim to make the commands short and easy to understand. Next, choose a reward system that works for you and your pup, whether that be treats, verbal praise, or a mixture of the two.
