Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a designer hybrid cross of a purebred Toy Poodle and a purebred Maltese. As a result, they tend to be an intelligent and energenic breed that requires a moderate amount of exercise. Maltipoos can vary from 8-14 inches in height and generally weigh between 6-20 lbs. Classified as a companion breed, these loyal and devoted dogs enjoy human interaction and many will form an intense bond with one human. Maltipoos have a thick, curly or straight coat of medium-length fur that can come in any color or combination of colors.
The Maltipoo coat is often described as “teddy bear”-like due to its combination of particular traits. It can be either soft and silky to the touch or densely curly, depending upon the fur texture that was inherited from its parents. Generally, it is a combination of both Poodle and Maltese fur types, often a medium length, with a tendency to be slightly wavy, and it can also vary in colors.
Maltipoos are small, smart, and friendly dogs, and much like any other breed they need a high-quality, balanced diet to stay healthy and happy. Generally speaking, Maltipoos should be eating a diet that consists of two main components: protein and carbohydrates. When choosing what to feed your Maltipoo, look for an AAFCO approved pet food that is designed specifically for the unique needs of a small-breed dog. Protein sources such as chicken, beef, turkey, and fish are usually the best options for your pooch.
Preparing for your new Maltipoo is an exciting, yet sometimes overwhelming, task. To ensure your pet has the best possible start in their new home, it's important to do the necessary research and plan ahead. Start by learning everything you can about Malties and their temperament– what kind of food and treats they love, the amount and type of exercise they need, and any particular grooming habits that involve specific care or medications. With that information, begin stocking up on food, treats, and hygiene items you can use to handle your pet’s needs.
Maltipoos are considered a "small dog breed," and typically reach a mature weight between six and 14 pounds. Generally, these pint-sized pups measure between nine and 16 inches tall when fully grown. However, Maltipoos aren't one-size-fits-all -there is a wide range of sizes within the breed. Some will stay on the smaller end of the spectrum, while others will grow to be 15 or even 16 pounds. All sizes are considered normal for the breed, and prospective owners should ask the breeder for an estimate of size at maturity when selecting a puppy.
Maltipoos are usually very well-suited for swimming activities. They often have an innate love for water and tend to enjoy it more than other breeds. As they have a small and lightweight body, they are easily buoyant and able to keep themselves afloat. Unfortunately, the same lack of weight can make it difficult for them to be able to paddle back to the shore. Therefore, it's important to ensure that they are wearing a vest that is suited to their body type. Additionally, never force a Maltipoo to enter the water if they appear to be uncomfortable or scared.
Generally speaking, Maltipoos get along well with other pets, as they are friendly, sociable animals with a great capacity to form bonds with other animals. They often form a strong bond with the other animals in their household, typically dominating over the other pet during playing. However, it is important to remember that just like any other pet, Maltipoos may not get along with every other animal, so it is important to observe the interactions between them and take steps to ensure the safety of all your pets.
Much like any other breed, the amount of daily training necessary for a Maltipoo depends on the individual dog and its needs. Generally speaking, Maltipoos (and all breeds) benefit from around 30 minutes of training a day, but it still depends on the size, age, remaining energy, and the type of activities you’re conducting. If you have a younger, larger Maltipoo that is full of energy, then an hour of exercise and/or training a day could be necessary.
