Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a hybrid breed that combines Maltese and Toy or Miniature Poodle. They are very lovable, low-maintenance, and loyal companions. They are also great for families due to being hypoallergenic and having low grooming needs. This hybrid breed is intelligent and will entertain you with their antics they even make a great guard dog due to being alert and very protective of their owners. Maltipoos have an amazing lifespan of up to 15 years with proper nutrition, exercise, and vet visits.
The Maltipoo coat can vary in texture and color depending on the lineage of the pup. Generally, they have a soft, wavy coat that may consist of multiple colors such as white, tan, black, grey, apricot and cream. It is made up of a blend of its parent breeds, the Maltese and Poodle, who both have coats that are hypoallergenic, meaning there is minimal shedding.
It is important to remember that Maltipoos need food specifically created for their size and breed. You should avoid feeding your Maltipoo human food, as it is often too rich in calories and fat, and can also lead to food allergies and intolerance issues. Additionally, pet owners should not feed their Maltipoo human snacks like chips or popcorn, sugary treats such as ice cream, or dairy products like cheese. It is also important to avoid rawhide or bones, as they can be a choking hazard or cause digestive or blockage issues.
Preparing your home for your new Maltipoo is as easy as puppy-proofing the environment and making sure everything is safe and ready for your new pup! Start by making sure that small objects, wires and anything hazardous is removed or put out of reach of your pup. Secure outlets or cover them with safety plugs. If you have stairs, baby gates can prevent them from accessing spaces that have been deemed off limits.
Maltipoo puppies can range in size, depending on the breed of the parents, though they typically stay between 5 to 20 pounds when they reach adulthood. It's important to remember that small breed puppies can take up to a year to reach their full size, so it can take a while to accurately determine how big your pup will be. To get the most accurate estimate of size, consult with a veterinarian or an experienced breeder and ask about the size of the puppy's parents.
Maltipoos generally enjoy swimming! They are a combination of the spirited Maltese and the intelligent Poodle, both of which are known for being excellent swimmers. Many Maltipoos will jump right in the pool to cool off and have fun! However, it is important to properly train and socialize your Maltipoo, so it knows how to swim safely and is comfortable around water. Swimming is a great way for your pup to burn off some energy and just have fun, but it is best to slowly introduce your pup to water and gradually increase the amount of time spent swimming.
Maltipoos are incredibly friendly and playful. Generally, they are great with kids and those of all ages. In addition to being warm and welcoming to children, Maltipoos aren't prone to aggression, which is key when introducing a pet to your family. While they typically take a moment to get accustomed to a new person or situation, their outgoing nature eventually prevails once they're comfortable. If raised around kids, a Maltipoo will usually develop a deep bond with them that will last for many years.
Training a Maltipoo requires dedication and consistency to ensure success. The amount of time varies depending on the age of the pup. Generally speaking, a small breed like a Maltipoo should have no more than 30 minutes of training per day. However, it is important to spread out the training throughout the day, making several shorter sessions as opposed to one long session. Too much training can cause exhaustion and frustration, making it harder to maintain focus and energy. Interweave the training sessions with plenty of playtime and reward with treats, positive reinforcement, and praise.
