Questions & Answers
Maltipoos, also known as Maltepoos, are small breeds of dogs that are a cross between a Maltese and a Poodle. They make great companions, as they are very lovable and affectionate. Here are some fun facts about Maltipoos: they can reach a maximum size of 20 pounds; their coats can be wavy or curly; they come in a variety of colors, from white to black; and they generally require daily brushing. Maltipoos are great with kids and other household pets, since they are known for their friendly nature.
The Maltipoo coat is usually described as being soft and silky. It is a hybrid of a Maltese and a Poodle, so the coat is a combination of the two. Depending on the Poodle genes, it can be curly or wavy, and is often seen clipped short to help keep it from becoming too long. The color of the coat can come in a variety of hues, generally white, cream, black, beige, and gray. Most Maltipoos have a single coat layer, however, some may have a double layer coat.
Maltipoos are a poodle/Maltese mix, and they need a diet that is balanced and nutritious. Unfortunately, there are some foods that simply are not safe for Maltipoos to eat. Human junk food, such as fried food, sugary snacks, and fast food, contain too much fat and not enough nutrients for these small breeds and can upset their delicate digestive system. Sweets, especially chocolate, can be dangerous for Maltipoos due to the high levels of theobromine, which is toxic to dogs.
Preparing your home for your new Maltipoo can be an exciting journey. To start, it's important to puppy-proof your home; being sure to remove any items which are potentially dangerous for your pup such as cords, poisonous plants, and any sharp objects. If you have any existing pets, you should start the introduction process to ensure they can coexist. You should also provide necessary items for your pup such as a comfortable, safe place to sleep, an appropriate bedding material, toys, a collar and tag, food and water bowls, and a brush for grooming.
Maltipoos are typically considered small dogs, often considered a type of toy breed. They are a hybrid mix of a Maltese and a Toy, Miniature, or Standard Poodle. Depending on the size of the Maltese and Poodle parent breeds, the size of the Maltipoo can also vary. Generally, Maltipoos are small dogs, but can weigh up to 18 pounds if the parent breeds are larger. Maltipoos usually get to between 8-14 inches long and have coats that can be wavy or curly.
Maltipoos typically need around one hour of exercise per day, spread out between activities such as leash walks, dog park visits, and chase sessions. As with all breeds, the exact amount of exercise needed will vary depending on age, size, and health. It’s important to remember to give the Maltipoo ample time for play and exercise, as a lack of these activities can lead to boredom and misbehaviors. Exercise should also be tailored to suit the individual dog's needs, so it’s best to consult with a vet to determine the best course.
Generally, Maltipoos get along with other pets quite well. Due to their outgoing and friendly nature, Maltipoos enjoy interacting with other animals and do not usually show aggression or act off-putting. That being said, proper supervision is still key when introducing a Maltipoo to other pets as it is with any new dog. Socializing a Maltipoo early and often with all types of animals will help ensure they grow up to be confident, well-rounded, and accepting of all types of animals.
When it comes to training your Maltipoo, the best thing to do is invest in positive reinforcement. This means rewarding your pup with a treat or a toy every time they display the right behavior. First, establish a routine with your pup and keep it consistent, so they have set expectations. Then, be sure to praise them whenever they do something right. Begin with basic commands, such as sit, stay, and come. Once they master these, or even if they don't, try to throw in more advanced commands.
