Questions & Answers
Maltipoos, also known as Maltepoos, are a hybrid breed resulting from a cross between a poodle (generally a toy or miniature) and a Maltese. Depending on the specific parent breeds involved, these dogs may be classified as either a toy, small, or large breed. Maltipoos are generally considered to be quite intelligent, friendly, and devoted family pets. The breed's size ranges from 4-14 pounds and the coat comes in a variety of colors, from white to cream to brown.
Maltipoos are hybrid dogs created by crossing a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Due to their mix of both purebred breeds, their hypoallergenic traits can vary. While some Maltipoos are more likely to trigger allergies and cause reactions in those with sensitivities, many families who have Maltipoos report that they are generally hypoallergenic dogs. This is due to the fact that the Maltese and the Poodle breeds produce very little dander, which is a major factor in allergic reactions.
Feeding your Maltipoo depends on age, activity level, metabolism, and any medical issues, but generally this hybrid breed will do best on a diet of high quality dry dog food along with additional servings of a wet food with protein like chicken, beef, duck, lamb, turkey, or fish. Supplement this diet with healthy vegetables and fruits like carrots, broccoli, apples, bananas, celery, and spinach. Avoid processed and sugary foods like table scraps, candy, and fruit juices as these can cause weight gain and affect your Maltipoo's overall health.
Maltipoo do have certain requirements in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and overall wellbeing. To begin, their fur type does require regular brushing and combing in order to remain tangle-free and knot-free. Typically, trimming and clipping every 6-8 weeks is also recommended because of their curls. On top of that, Maltipoo typically require bathing at least once a month; however, only using natural fur and coat conditioning products when appropriate. Generally, these hybrid dogs require moderate exercise, starting from daily walks and outdoor activities to appropriate playtime with toys.
The size of your Maltipoo puppy all depends on its parentage and can vary greatly. Typically, Maltipoo puppies reach 10-20 pounds in weight and generally reach full size around 12-18 months. However, mini Maltipoo puppies can range from 4-10 pounds and reach full size as early as 8 months. Some Maltipoo puppies can be larger or significantly smaller than this range, depending on its lineage, so it is a good idea to contact the breeder who can best explain the expected size of your puppy.
Maltipoos are generally known to love the water, and many enjoy taking a dip in a pool, lake, or pond. Their coat is often wooly and soft, making them an ideal candidate for swimming activities. Maltipoos can be taught to swim at a relatively young age, and many owners find that they do it without fear, making them an ideal companion for those who enjoy water activities. Since Maltipoos are so small, they don't actually require any special training for swimming.
Maltipoos are a great choice for first-time owners! These small dogs are incredibly intelligent and highly trainable, making them a low-maintenance option for those who are looking for a pet to join their family. Their people-friendly disposition and loyalty make them great companions, and they don't have the challenge of potty training that larger breeds present. Maltipoos may also live longer than other small breeds, with an average life span of 14-16 years, meaning you can enjoy many years with your new pet.
Yes, Maltipoos are considered intelligent dogs and they can understand and learn commands quickly. They are eager to please their owners as well, so they are usually quick to respond to basic commands. Maltipoos are often praised for their intelligence and independent thinking abilities. They have a great capacity to remember things and can respond to their owner's requests with good accuracy. Maltipoos are considered to be very trainable since they learn tasks and commands with relative ease. This makes them an excellent choice for a pet, if you're looking for a clever companion.
