Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are the result of a cross between a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. These hybrid dogs are extremely friendly and affectionate and make wonderful family pets. Maltipoos can range from 4 to 20 pounds when fully grown, and usually stand about 7-12 inches tall. They are very intelligent and easy to train, and are considered hypoallergenic due to their low-shedding coat. Being a hybrid breed, some Maltipoos will have a coat texture more like a Maltese, while others will be more like a Poodle.
Whether or not a Maltipoo will cause you to have allergies depends on the individual. Generally, Maltipoos are non-shedding, hypoallergenic dogs, which some people find to be a benefit if allergies are a concern. However, the amount of allergens they produce, if any, still varies among individual dogs, so there is no guarantee that they won't cause any reactions. Additionally, if your allergies are severe, it is still best to consult an allergist to find out for sure if a Maltipoo is the right fit for you.
Maltipoos do require a few special dietary considerations. They have small appetites and can gain weight easily, so it is important to keep them on a regular diet plan. A pure breed Maltipoo should be given nutritious, high-grade food and it's advisable to measure the food amounts to avoid overfeeding. A high-quality, grain-free kibble is a good option for a Maltipoo and it is recommended to supplement with canned food and fresh vegetables, as well as treats.
Preparing for a new Maltipoo can seem overwhelming, but taking it one step at a time can make it much easier. Start by purchasing the basic supplies that your dog will need, such as a collar, tags, leash, food and water dishes, a bed, and either a kennel or designated bed area that will be their space. Once you have all of the necessary items, you can begin setting up their feeding and potty schedules and establishing any boundaries that will ensure their safety.
Maltipoos, or Maltese-Poodle crosses, are considered to be small to medium-sized animals. They typically weigh between 8 and 20 pounds and usually stand between 8 and 14 inches at the shoulder. While they are not considered to be 'big dogs' due to their size, they can possess some characteristics typically associated with a larger breed, such as some Maltipoos being quite active, vocal, and territorial. The result can be a surprisingly big personality packed into a small package.
It's recommended that a Maltipoo gets at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, which should include a mixture of walking and playing. To ensure your pup is getting enough exercise, aim for 10 minutes of walking in the morning, 10 minutes in the afternoon, and 10 minutes in the evening. That way, your pup will stay healthy and her activity level will remain balanced. If your pup appears to have extra energy and/or appears to be bored, you may add an extra 10-15 minutes to the daily walking routine.
Maltipoos are generally known to get along well with other animals, including cats, other dogs, and even rodents and other small household pets. They are typically friendly and social dogs that love attention, so as long as the other pet is willing to get to know them, they tend to make fast friends. They tend to thrive when they have a companion to play with, as this helps to keep them happy and ensure they get the exercise and companionship they need to stay healthy.
Training your Maltipoo is not overly complicated but requires patience and consistency. Firstly, identify which behavioral traits you would like to train your Maltipoo for. From there, you should find a positive reinforcement option that your Maltipoo responds well to, such as a treat. When training your pet, focus on one command at a time and repeat the commands regularly, rewarding your pet with a treat or vocal praise each time they obey. Eventually, you must start to phase out the treats, only rewarding your dog with verbal praise when they complete the command.
