Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are designer dogs that are a result of crossing a Maltese with a Toy Poodle. They are generally smaller, with an average weight of 8-14 pounds and a height of 8-14 inches at the shoulder. Maltipoos have life spans of 12-15 years and generally tend to be quite loving, gentle, and intelligent. They are generally considered low-shedding and hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for those who may have allergies.
Maltipoos are a mix of Toy Poodles and Malteses, and they can be non-shedding. While Maltipoos can be any number of different combinations of either parent breed, they are usually considered to be low shed or non-shed. A Maltipoo with more Poodle in it will be less likely to shed than one with more Maltese, but there is no guarantee that any one Maltipoo will be completely non-shedding.
Maltipoos should not be fed chocolate, grapes, raisins, candy, or anything with caffeine, as these can all be very toxic to them. Additionally, they should not be fed raw or uncooked bones as this can lead to choking and other health risks. They also cannot safely eat foods high in fat or sugar as these can lead to digestion problems and weight gain. It is best to feed your Maltipoo foods that are specifically designed for their small stomachs, like dry kibble and canned puppy food.
Preparing for a new Maltipoo is an exciting experience. Prior to bringing your pup home, it is important to purchase the essentials – think crates, bedding, food, toys, and treats. It is also important that you research the breed; Maltipoos tend to be active and intelligent, so socializing and exercising them is fundamental for creating a strong bond between the two of you. Consider enrolling them in doggy daycare or taking them to puppy classes, so they can learn basic commands and develop good behaviors.
Maltipoos come in a variety of sizes that depend mainly upon the size of their parents. Generally, they are categorized as Toy, miniature, and standard size based on the size of their purebred parents: the Maltese and Toy or Miniature Poodle. Toy Maltipoos are the smallest size ranging from 5 to 10 pounds, miniature Maltipoos range from 10 to 15 pounds, and a standard Maltipoo is anywhere from 15 to 20 pounds. The size of a Maltipoo puppy can usually be determined by the age of 8 weeks old.
Taking your Maltipoo running is certainly an option. However, it's important to ensure that your pup is adequately trained and muzzled if necessary. In addition, consider your pup's current medical condition and age. Depending on the age of the dog and its health condition, running could be risky and even lead to injuries. If you have small Maltipoos, it's best to start with shorter distances until they build up enough endurance. Make sure your unit is sufficiently conditioned first before running longer distances to avoid over-exerting him.
Maltipoos are a great pet choice for someone with other pets in the home. They are generally highly friendly and social creatures, and are known for getting along with animals from many different species such as cats, birds, and small rodents. When introducing a Maltipoo to an existing pet, it's important to use caution and properly socialize the animals. Doing so gradually will help to create a positive environment where all of the pets can get along. Additionally, it's beneficial to provide plenty of exercise opportunities for the pets to redirect energy into peaceful activities.
The amount of daily training Maltipoos need differs from dog to dog but in general, you should plan to train your Maltipoo for at least 15 to 20 minutes each day. How much training time your dog actually needs depends on his age, his breed and his overall personality. Younger puppies may need more frequent and a bit longer training sessions, while an older Maltipoo may not need as many daily sessions. You should always strive to make training sessions positive and encourage your Maltipoo throughout.
