Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a hybrid cross between a Maltese and a Poodle. They are considered to be a designer breed and are a toy-sized dog that are known for their intelligence, playful personalities and low-shedding coats. Maltipoos are not recognized by any major kennel clubs, however they are recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club and the International Designer Canine Registry. Because they are friendly, highly intelligent and eager to please, Maltipoos make excellent and loyal family pets.
Maltipoos typically have a soft, curly coats that come in a variety of colors including white, cream, apricot, red, black, and even parti-colored or spotted. The coat of a Maltipoo is usually quite luxurious and often requires daily brushing to remain free from knots and matting, as well as regular trims to keep it looking healthy. The thickness of the coat varies from dog to dog, but regardless, it’s typically a low-shedding or even non-shedding coat.
Yes, Maltipoos have special dietary needs-especially in regards to proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. As a hybrid breed of Toy Poodle and Maltese, Maltipoos have a considerably small stomach, so the amount of food they're able to intake should be monitored. Feeding young Maltipoos 3 times a day in very small portions helps to ensure their nutritional needs are being met without any digestion problems. The food should be high in quality proteins such as fish, chicken, or turkey and may even include some vegetables, carbohydrate-rich grains, and legumes.
Before getting a Maltipoo, it's important to be prepared with the essential items they will need. First and foremost, a quality pet bed and food and water bowls. Your Maltipoo will need a leash and collar as well as some grooming and health products like a brush and toothbrush. A sturdy crate or carrier should be acquired which makes it easier to transport your pup during and after travel. Other essential items may include interactive toys, a pet playpen, and treats or food specifically designed for small breeds.
Maltipoos come in a wide range of sizes, from small toy sizes to larger medium sizes. While the breed standard for a Maltipoo ranges anywhere between 4 and 25 pounds, most Maltipoos average between 5 and 15 pounds, as this is the desired size for the breed. The size of a Maltipoo can also be impacted by the size of the parents, as smaller parents often produce smaller puppies. Additionally, the toy size is usually reserved for those with a pocketbook size and can come at a higher cost.
Maltipoos are generally active and highly intelligent dogs, so it's not surprising that many of them enjoy taking a dip in the pool or lake. Some Maltipoos are natural born swimmers, while others may require a bit more coaxing and encouragement. If you do choose to take your Maltipoo swimming, it is important that they wear a life vest. A good rule of thumb is to make sure the vest fits securely but allows your Maltipoo to swim freely. Other safety measures include keeping them closely supervised and gradually introducing them to deeper water.
Yes, Maltipoos make great family pets! Extremely social, they get along well with other pets, children, and adults. They thrive on plenty of interaction with their families and enjoy being a part of the fun. Maltipoos love to be the center of attention but they are also content simply to be with their people. They are loyal and affectionate, happy to join in activities or just hang out with their families. Their small size makes them suitable canine companions in cramped spaces, such as apartments.
Training a Maltipoo requires dedication and consistency. Generally, you should aim for at least 30 minutes of practice each day. The time spent training should be divided into smaller sessions, with five to ten minutes for each activity. You should also supplement your daily training with small tasks that can be done throughout the day, such as teaching your Maltipoo basic commands like 'sit', 'stay', and 'come'. If you’re consistent with your training, your Maltipoo will soon understand how you’d like them to behave.
