Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a hybrid class of dog, descended from both Maltese and Toy or Miniature Poodles. The Maltese is a small, lovable breed with silky white fur, a long feathered tail, and an outgoing, affable personality; while the Toy Poodle is an equally delightful breed known for its intelligence and wavy, curly coat. These two breeds combined have found a very loyal following due to their friendly and affectionate natures, combined with their small size and low-shedding coats.
The Maltipoo usually has a soft, wavy, and silky coat of hair. The length and texture of the coat may vary from individual to individual, however, it is generally light in texture, often becoming curlier when left uncut. While some Maltipoos are born with white fur, others may feature a variety of colors including apricot, black, gray, white, silver, and red. Maltipoos may also get patches of a different color than the rest of their fur.
Maltipoos are small dog breeds that have a coat of both Maltese and Poodle. As a result, they require a diet that is tailored to their needs and quirks. Generally, Maltipoos should eat food specifically designed for small dogs. This food should include high-quality protein sources like chicken, turkey, or fish as well as essential vitamins and minerals for healthy growth and development. A homemade diet can also be fed to a Maltipoo, as long as it is carefully balanced with the appropriate food groups.
Preparing for a new Maltipoo can take some planning and forethought. First, research the breed to learn about all the needs that a Maltipoo has. Look into grooming, exercise, and health care requirements so that when it arrives, you are ready. Be sure to purchase any needed items such as food dishes, sheets, blankets, toys, and other supplies. Additionally, look into training methods that many have found successful for the breed – starting early will help create an easy to manage pup.
Maltipoos can come in a variety of sizes, depending on the genetics of the parents. Generally, though, they tend to be classified in four sizes based off their weight at full adulthood. These sizes include the Toy (under 10 pounds), the Mini (10 to 15 pounds), the Small Standard (15 to 20 pounds), and the Large Standard (over 20 pounds). It's important to note, however, that the size of any individual Maltipoo is highly dependent on the size of the parents during breeding, since this is an unpredictable genetic trait.
Absolutely! Maltipoos tend to be active, energetic dogs who enjoy getting plenty of exercise. As long as you remember to keep them at a comfortable pace and in a safe environment, like an enclosed park, then there’s no reason why your Maltipoo can’t go running with you. Just make sure to plan your runs around the time of day that’s most comfortable for your pup. High midday temperatures can make things a bit too hot, so it’s best to plan your run for early morning or evening instead.
Maltipoos are known for their friendly, nonaggressive nature, which makes them typically great with other pets. They tend to get along well with other dogs, cats, and small animals, and may even enjoy playing and cuddling with them. On occasion, they may have a stronger prey drive and be a bit more wary of creatures that are small and fast-moving, so introducing them to other pets gradually will help ensure that everyone gets along. The exercise and social contact that comes from playing with other animals can even help keep Maltipoos from getting bored or displaying Separation Anxiety behavior.
The amount of time you should dedicate to training your Maltipoo will depend on their age, needs, and the specific commands you'd like to teach them. Generally speaking, it's best to provide several 10-15 minute sessions throughout the day around three to four total so that your pup has more opportunities to practice what they're learning. Within each session, you should focus on one particular command or skill and maintain a consistent routine. For puppies, it's crucial to provide frequent reinforcement and rewards as a way to encourage them and keep them motivated.
