The Pomeranian is the smallest member of the Spitz family, which is known for its majestic coat and sledding abilities. Named after Pomerania, a town in northeast Germany, the Pom first rose to popularity as a royal pet. Soon, the demand for smaller Pomeranians as companion dogs grew and the breed was refined to reach the size that it is today.
Pomeranians are tiny dogs that can be anywhere between 7-12 inches in height or 3-7 pounds in weight. The odd larger and heavier Pomeranian comes out occasionally in litters but they are less common. A Pom should never be too heavy to carry around. They are meant to be small and portable.
Pomeranians are small but healthy dogs that can live right up to the age of 16! Like many small dogs, an aging Pom is prone to developing certain health issues like luxating patella (a knee issue), tracheal collapse, hypoglycemia, teeth overcrowding, and hair loss. The good news is, Pomeranians that are carefully bred are less likely to suffer from these problems.
