Questions & Answers
Pomskies are one of the newest designer breeds, the result of a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. They are considered to be a crossbreed or hybrid, and therefore do not have a single, distinct breed classification of their own. However, because both of these breeds are members of the Spitz family, it is likely that this classification would be applicable to Pomskies as well. As such, they are considered a type of "Spitz type" dog.
While Pomskies are known for being low-shedding, there is no guarantee that they are hypoallergenic due to the fact that no dog is considered fully hypoallergenic. However, being a hybrid of the Pomeranian and Husky, these dogs typically have course coats rather than the traditional soft fur of breeds like poodles which are popular for being hypoallergenic.
Pomskies should not be fed any type of chocolate, as it can be toxic to them. That includes baking chocolate as well as cocoa powder. Additionally, dog bones can be a choking hazard, so bones of any type should not be given to them. Grapes, grapeseeds, raisins, and currants can cause acute kidney failure in dogs, so these foods should be avoided. The diet of Pomskies should be composed of mostly high-quality dry dog food that is specifically formulated for small breeds.
Pomsky are a beautiful and relatively new breed, so information is still being gathered and not all of the requirements are comprehensive. Generally speaking, however, they require regular exercise and socialization, similar to any other breed. Being part of the Spitz family, they may require basic brushing and coat maintenance weekly or bi-weekly brushing is recommended to keep the coat from becoming matted. As with most dogs, regular visits to the veterinary for general routine check-ups, vaccinations, and nail trimming are recommended.
Pomskies can come in a variety of sizes. Generally, they will weight somewhere between 5-45lbs when fully grown. The size of a Pomsky will often depend on its parents – Toy, Mini, or Standard Pomeranian, and the size of its Siberian Husky parent. With parents coming from both small and large breed, there is a range of sizes you may end up with. Additionally, individual dogs within the same litter can have different weights and sizes. Pomskies can also come with medium or long fur depending on which parent they take after more.
Absolutely! Taking a Pomsky running is a great way to bond with your pup and provide them with much needed exercise and stimulation. You may need to start off slowly if your pup is not used to regular long-distance running, but as they get more and more accustomed to running, they can build up their stamina. Be sure to look into buying special gear, such as comfortable and supportive running shoes for your pup, and a lead or harness which allows them to move freely and safely.
Pomskies can make wonderful family pets as they tend to be loyal, affectionate, and intelligent. They are typically gentle, and, when trained well, can be great companions for children. Pomskies aren't overly active, so they won't tire the kids out too quickly, and since they're quite small, they can't do much harm. They possess the energetic, cuddly nature of a Pomeranian and the alertness and intelligence of a Siberian Husky, which can help them recognize when they need to tone down their behavior and be mindful of those around them.
Training a Pomsky is an important part of being a responsible pet owner. With consistency, patience, and reward-based techniques, you can effectively train your Pomsky. It is important to ensure that training is short, fun, and engaging for your pup. Start out by teaching basic commands such as “sit” and “stay”. Once your Pomsky is familiar with each command, small treats can be offered as a reward. Provide plenty of positive reinforcement and if your pup is not following a command correctly, gently redirect the behavior instead of punishing your pet.
