Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a relatively new hybrid breed, created when a Siberian Husky is crossbred with a Pomeranian. This makes Pomskies a member of the spitz breed, which is a group of northern dog breeds known for their thick fur, pointed muzzle, and curled tail. Pomskies are classified as either a medium or small breed, depending on the size of the two parents. They typically have an active demeanor and require regular exercise. In addition they enjoy the companionship of their owners and have a very sociable nature.
Pomskies can be considered low to moderate shedders. They are not traditionally considered to be non-shedding breeds, however it is possible to reduce the amount of shedding through regular grooming. Brushing or combing your Pomsky once or twice a week, bathing once a month, and trimming its fur can help reduce shedding. Pomskies can also benefit from a healthy diet, as a healthy diet can help the quality of its fur. Consistent grooming and a balanced diet can help keep shedding at a minimum.
Pomskies are cute, energetic little canines that need special care when it comes to their diet. Generally, the best option is to feed your Pomsky a high-quality, nutritionally complete dry kibble or wet food made specifically for small breeds. It should contain enough protein and all the vitamins and minerals your pup needs to be healthy and have a long, full life. Other treats like cooked vegetables, lean meats, and small amounts of cheese can be added in addition to the regular balanced diet.
Before you get a Pomsky, you should make sure you have the essentials ready. A Pomsky will need a water and food dish, a safe kennel or crate, an appropriate collar, some type of leash, pet shampoo, a brush and nail clippers, toys, bedding and training pads. Depending on where the Pomsky will be staying, you may also want to invest in a pet gate.
Most Pomsky puppies will reach adult size when they are between 9 and 18 months old. Generally, they could range from under 10 pounds to up to 30-35 pounds at adulthood. The size of your Pomsky will depend on the size of their parents and the genealogical line they come from. To get a good estimation of how big your puppy will be, you can research the lineage of both the mother and the father breeds – such as the Husky and the Pomeranian. Doing this will help give you a more accurate prediction as to the size your pup will become.
The amount of time you should walk your Pomsky each day largely depends on their individual breed, age, and health. Typically, energy levels for Pomskies can be quite high, so it is recommended that you give your pup at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, split into several shorter walks or one longer one. If your pup is young, a minimum of two walks per day of at least 10 minutes each is helpful in helping regulate their energy levels. Older Pomskies may require less and can benefit from shorter walks or recreational activities such as playing fetch or even agility training.
Pomskies can be a great fit for first-time owners! They are relatively easy to train due to their intelligence, and their good-natured personalities mean they form strong attachment bonds with their owners. Since they are a relatively small breed, they are well-suited to smaller living conditions. Additionally, their exercise needs are fairly minimal, so they can thrive in households that don't have the time to devote to daily walks or activities. While they still have some herding and hunting instincts, these dogs can be easily managed with training.
It is suggested that the minimum daily exercise for a Pomsky should be between 30 minutes to an hour. If you are able to provide longer periods of activity, there are many activities you can do with your Pomsky that can occupy both its mental and physical needs. This includes leash walks, playing fetch, agility or obedience training, providing toys it can engage with, and socialization with other animals. Each of these activities can provide an enjoyable and stimulating experience for your Pomsky. In any case, the daily amount of exercise your Pomsky needs depends on its energy level and playfulness.
