Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a designer crossbreed between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. They have loving and loyal personalities and make great family pets, so they are becoming increasingly popular. While these dogs are small, usually between 10 and 30 pounds, they have boundless energy and need plenty of exercise to keep them healthy and happy. Inspired by their Husky ancestor, Pomskies can be quite vocal and have a tendency to howl or bark. Pomskies’ coats come in a variety of colors, including white, black, cream, sable, and gray.
Pomskies are designer hybrids or "designer dogs" which often exhibit certain physical and behavior traits of both parent breeds, in this case the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, however, their overall characteristics in terms of coat type, coat color, and hypoallergenic status can vary greatly from pup to pup. Although neither parent breed is considered to be hypoallergenic, some Pomskies may display low dander characteristics which could potentially provide some benefit and relief for an allergy sufferer.
Pomskies are, by definition, part Pomeranian and part Husky, two breeds with differing dietary needs. As such, there is no single answer to the question of whether Pomskies have special dietary needs. It is generally recommended that Pomskies be fed a high-quality, nutritionally-balanced diet that is specific to their size and weight. Depending on the size and activity level of your pet, their dietary needs may vary from the typical Pomeranian or Husky.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Pomsky requires preparation and commitment. Start by doing plenty of research so you are aware of what kind of care and training this breed requires. Make sure you have a consistent routine and set realistic, consistent expectations and boundaries. Provide your pup with plenty of opportunities to socialize safely and provide plenty of physical and mental stimulation. Be patient and loving while providing discipline. Spend time bonding with your pup during regular activities and always reward desired behavior. Love your pup and take the time to understand his unique individual needs.
The size of your Pomsky puppy ultimately depends on its genetics and can be influenced by a number of things, such as gender and its parents' sizes. Generally, the sizing scale typically ranges from Toy-sized (10 lbs or less) to Mini-sized (15 20 lbs) and Standard-sized (20 30 lbs). The appearance of the puppy at the moment may not be an adequate indicator of its full adult size, as puppies tend to grow considerably as they mature.
Absolutely! Pomskies love swimming, and why wouldn't they? With their thick fur coat, these puppies need a way to cool off. Swimming is a fantastic way for them to keep cool and help them get a great workout. Often, Pomskies are excited to jump in the water and they can learn to master the art of swimming quickly. It's a great way to bond with them, as they love to have someone join them for a swim. Make sure to supervise your pup while swimming, though, as their small size can make them vulnerable in the water.
Yes, Pomskies may be great for family living. These highly intelligent, energetic dogs require plenty of exercise, combined with regular mental stimulation, and do best in homes with a yard and plenty of space for them to run and play in. They can also bond well with children and other pets in the household, providing the necessary socialization training is provided early on.
The amount of training and exercise required for Pomskies varies significantly depending on the individual. Generally speaking, a session of up to 10 minutes of active play per day is a great way to ensure they maintain a healthy lifestyle. This can consist of interactive toys, walking, or games that keep them engaged. Additionally, five to ten minutes of mental stimulation, like teaching them commands or having an obedience training session, is also beneficial. All in all, it is recommended that Pomskies get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, including 10-15 minutes of dedicated training.
