Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid breed of dog, consisting of a combination of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. This means that they have the traits of both of their parent breeds, making them highly intelligent and independent dogs that love to be challenged. They are also highly trainable and can learn many behaviors with consistent and positive training techniques. They tend to be a good fit for active lifestyles, as the combination of their parent's breeds gives them innate wanderlust and energy.
Pomskies may not be considered non-shedding, as they are a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Each breed has different levels of shedding and, when combined, can result in higher levels of shedding. However, they do typically shed much less than their full-breed relatives due to the mixing of the two breeds. Although brushing a Pomsky's fur regularly may help reduce the amount of fur shed, they should not be considered a non-shedding breed.
Pomskies are sensitive to many foods, so it is important to pay attention to what they are eating. Things to avoid would be any processed foods or human foods that contain a lot of fat, sugar, salt and additives. Additionally, it is important not to overfeed your Pomsky. Too much food can cause obesity. Other food items that are not recommended are cooked bones, large chunks of raw meat, avocados, garlic and onions, raisins, macadamia nuts and grapes.
Before bringing your new Pomsky home, it is important to make sure your home is ready for them. Start by puppy-proofing your space, emptying the room of items that are within your pup's reach, and making sure that there are no items that may be harmful to them such as wires or chemicals. Additionally, you should ensure that all items necessary for your pup's well-being, including their food, water bowl, bedding, toy, and collar, are ready and within reach.
Pomskies are considered to be a medium-sized breed, usually weighing between 15-30 lbs. However, it should be noted that due to their mixed heritage qualities, size and exact weights of individual dogs can vary. Large Pomsky specimens may weigh closer to 30-35 lbs while the tinier ones might be closer to 15 lbs. Generally speaking, Pomskies are not considered to be oversized but they are certainly bigger than traditional lap dogs and offer a very attractive combination of traits from both their parent breeds.
Pomskies may generally enjoy swimming. Like most canines, their deep-rooted ancestry as sled dogs in colder climates gives them the instinctual ability to swim. However, the level of enjoyment or aptitude your Pomsky will have for swimming depends on a variety of factors, such as their individual swimming experience, personality and physical traits. To increase the chances of your Pomsky loving swimming, it is important to introduce them to the activity at an early age. This way, they can become comfortable with the environment and develop a pleasant attitude toward swimming as they grow.
Pomskies can make excellent companions for kids, as long as they are given the proper socialization and training. With early, positive interactions with children, Pomskies can learn to respect boundaries and build a strong bond over time. Pomskies are a playful and sociable breed, so they can enjoy spending time with kids, and bring plenty of joy to the household. As with all breeds, it's important that children are taught how to properly interact with puppies, so they have the best chance of developing a strong relationship.
Training your Pomsky is important for its development, as such it is advised that you dedicate at least thirty minutes per day to do so. This amount of time should be split between physical activity and playtime, as well as mental stimulation. Depending on what type of training you do for your Pomsky, the time may vary; however, it is important to remember that consistency is key.
