Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid breed that is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. This mix of the two breeds have resulted in a charming, playful, and loyal dog. They are also quite active and can require daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and content. Pomskies tend to have the fox-like face of the Pomeranian and often the blue eyes of the Siberian Husky.
Pomskies are typically considered hypoallergenic. However, as with any dog breed, there is a chance that someone could be allergic to the dander and fur of a Pomsky. If you or someone in your household is prone to allergies, it is best to do a patch test and spend time in close proximity to the dog beforehand to ensure it does not cause any reactions. Similarly, if you find yourself developing signs of allergies after getting a Pomsky, be sure to speak to a doctor and take any medication advised.
Pomskies should not be fed human food items as they do not have a digestive system that can process them properly, and these items can cause health issues leading to much bigger issues. Additionally, Pomskies should not be given typical dog treats or bones, as these can be a choking hazard. Foods that are high in fat, such as bacon, can cause upset stomachs, so it is best to stick with leaner proteins like chicken and fish. Also, table scraps should be avoided.
Preparing your home for a new Pomsky can be a fun and exciting task! First of all, make sure you have appropriate supplies like food and water dishes, a leash and collar, and a bed or crate. Secondly, create a safe and comfortable environment for your pet. Place any hazardous items and possible choking hazards out of reach and puppy-proof your home. Thirdly, select an area for potty training, such as a walk-up spot with grass or dirt, and set up a routine for your Pomsky.
Pomskies are considered a 'designer breed,' so there can be quite a bit of variation in size. An adult Pomsky typically weighs between 10-25 pounds, with females being slightly smaller than males. Depending on early nutrition and general care, your Pomsky puppy can reach its adult size in anywhere from eight to twelve months. It's important to keep in mind that there is no way of accurately predicting the size your puppy will reach as an adult since all dogs are individuals.
Pomskies are high-energy dogs and need a lot of exercise. Generally, they require an hour of exercise per day, with longer walks, runs, hikes, and playtime. Keeping your Pomsky active helps prevent weight gain and behavior issues. If possible, vary the exercise, including activities such as Frisbee, fetch, agility, and dog swimming to provide more physical stimulation. Furthermore, regular mental stimulation like puzzle toys or training sessions can help too. When providing exercise for your Pomsky, it is important to monitor their overall condition and adjust the intensity appropriately.
Pomskies can typically get along with other pets if they are properly socialized. It is beneficial to socialize your Pomsky to other animals early in life to ensure they feel comfortable in their presence and understand the proper etiquette for interacting with them. With consistent training, Pomskies can be taught how to politely play and interact with other animals. Proper socialization is key to building a positive relationship between your Pomsky and any other pets in the home. However, care should be taken when introducing any pet into a new home, as they all have different personalities and reactions to meeting one another.
Training a Pomsky can be rewarding, but it does take time, patience, and dedication in order to be successful. It is not an "easy" process by any means, and it requires consistency and a deep understanding of the animal. Positive reinforcement, such as verbal praise and treats, can be effective methods; however, consistency is the key. It's also important to note that a Pomsky's breed is known to be quite independent and stubborn, making it more of a challenge in getting them to learn commands.
