Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid breed of animal made by crosses between a Pomeranian and an Alaska Husky. They are miniature dogs, often no bigger than 12 pounds, and possess features of both their parent breeds such as thick double coats and sharp blue eyes. Pomskies have a big personality and like to be around people, and they require regular brushing for their long hair. They can also be high-energy and need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy.
Pomskies boast a luxuriously soft and fluffy coat that makes them incredibly soft to the touch. Depending on the Pomsky parentage, the coat can be short like a Pomeranian or long like a husky parent, sometimes even a combination of the two! Generally speaking, they usually have a double coat with a thick undercoat and a longer topcoat that can often display different colors and markings that reflect both parent breeds. The most common coat colors are black and white, but they can range from tan to red to white and grey.
Pomskies eat a balanced diet of high-quality, grain-free, veterinary-approved dry food made for smaller dogs, supplemented with wet food for added nutrition and texture. Wet food should always be rotated as their diet changes and should consist of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates that meet the health needs of the specific breed. Adding home-cooked meals, raw meats, and proteins to their diet helps maintain the health of a Pomsky. If treats are given, it's important to regulate the amount given, since Pomskies can have a high metabolism.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Pomsky is a rewarding and fulfilling experience. To achieve this, you should create a safe and loving environment for your puppy to grow up in. Preparing for the puppy mentally and financially is also important. Spend time researching Pomskies so you know how to best meet their needs especially when it comes to diet, exercise, and socialization. Set up a regular schedule for meals, playtime, and training to keep your puppy's behavior in check.
Pomskies vary in size, depending on the parents—husky father and Pomeranian mother. On average, adults range from 15 to 30 pounds, with females tending to be smaller than males. However, some individuals may be larger or quite a bit smaller than average. The height also varies, with males typically standing 14 to 17 inches tall, and females 12 to 16 inches tall. With diligent care and proper nutrition, these hybrids can live between 10 and 15 years.
Pomskies can be great swimmers! Generally, they love playing in the water and enjoy taking a dip. It’s an activity that’s rewarding for both the pet parent and the pet, as the pup gets to cool off, and you get to appreciate the beauty of your fluffy friend in action. If you would like to get your Pomsky ready for a swim, it’s essential that you start off with a shallow body of water and that you closely observe them.
Pomskies can make wonderful family pets since they thrive on attention and interaction. Generally speaking, Pomskies make excellent companions for children as they love to play and cuddle. Pomskies have a lot of energy and have been known to bond strongly with their human families, making them loyal and attentive to children. While they can have a strong herding instinct, they often still respond well to training and genuinely enjoy spending time with the family. With careful socialization and training, Pomskies can become an ideal companion for children of any age.
Training a Pomsky is not always easy, but with the right strategies and commitment it can be done. To start, it is important to have a good grasp of the temperament of the breed which can help when setting expectations for the puppy and defining achievable goals. Being consistent in both discipline, praise, and reinforcement is also key in training success. Setting aside a scheduled time each day to focus on training will help ensure that progress is made and expectations are met. In addition, providing a stimulating environment can be helpful so that your pet will learn to use positive outlets for their energy.
