Questions & Answers
Pomskies, a hybrid of the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, are known for their intelligence and adaptability whilst being fun-loving, loyal, and affectionate dogs. Not only do they love getting attention from their owners, but they also show a strong affinity for running and playing. In terms of appearance, these furry friends usually inherit husky-like facial features and erect ears from their Pomeranian forebears, with a thick and lush coat. Pomskies come in a multitude of colors, including black, white, grey, brown, and sable.
Pomskies are a hybrid breed, meaning they have different traits from both parent breeds, the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. Generally speaking, they are low to moderate shedders, especially when compared to a purebred Siberian Husky. They inherit the Pomeranian's coat, which typically has a tendency to shed less than the Siberian Husky's thick fur. Additionally, regular grooming can help contain shedding and promote healthy skin and coat.
Pomskies require a dog food that is specially formulated for large breeds with high levels of energy. To ensure optimal nutrition and health, it is best to feed them a premium diet that contains no artificial fillers, colors or flavors. Due to their small size, they have slightly different dietary requirements than larger breeds and may need to eat smaller portions of food more frequently throughout the day. Healthy sources of fat, protein, fiber, and vitamins are all important parts of a Pomsky's diet.
Preparing in advance for your new Pomsky is key to a successful transition into your home. Before bringing your pup home, make sure you have everything you'll need to make it feel safe and comfortable food and water bowls, a collar and leash, bedding, toys, waste bags, and a kennel/crate. You'll also want to make sure you've researched the breed's general behavior and grooming requirements and taken the necessary steps to set up a regular veterinary care plan.
Pomskies are small to medium-sized dogs which usually range between 10 and 20 pounds. Generally, Pomskies are not considered as large dogs when compared to breeds such as the Labrador Retriever and German Shephard. However, Pomskies have a very thick and dense double coat, so its appearance can be quite large and bulky. Additionally, Pomskies are listed as medium-sized dogs in the American Kennel Club's breed groups, a designation reserved for breeds around 15 to 25 pounds.
It's important to determine how much exercise is suitable for your Pomsky, based on their age, breed, and overall health. As a general rule, an adult Pomsky should get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, with walks at least once daily. If you have an active breed such as a Husky, you might think about providing additional exercise either through playing games outdoors, or activities such as running. If your Pomsky is a toy breed, then shorter periods of exercise are likely more suitable.
Pomskies are considered to be a good choice for families with kids. These loyal, affectionate dogs are social and loving, often displaying a special bond with children. They'll happily join in a game of tag or fetch, and generally adapt well to the energy and enthusiasm of children. The biggest concern of having a Pomsky in the home with kids is always safety. Children should be taught how to care for and interact with dogs in a responsible way, with supervision always provided. Additionally, it's important to clearly define boundaries and instill a respect for the Pomsky.
Training a Pomsky is a rewarding experience, and the key is consistency. First, establish a routine. Figure out what order you want to teach the commands in and how often and for how long to practice each session. Next, use positive reinforcement. Reward desired behaviors with treats, loud praise, eye contact, and petting. Set your Pomsky up for success by keeping distractions to a minimum, breaking big tasks into manageable chunks, and gradually increasing difficulty. Lastly, be patient and pay attention. Monitor your pup's attention span and end the lesson if he or she seems bored or frustrated.
