Questions & Answers
Pomskies are extremely intelligent dogs that are known to have a great deal of energy. Moreover, these canine companions are loyal, loving, and alert, making them a great fit for families who want an intelligent pet. Although Pomskies are not officially recognized as an official breed, they are growing in popularity thanks to their playful and devoted nature. Some fun facts about this hybrid are that they normally weigh between 15 to 30 pounds, come in a variety of coat colors, and can have either upright ears or folded ears.
The Pomsky coat is typically fluffy, dense, and very soft to the touch. This unique coat has a luxurious look that can be difficult to replicate! The coloration and coat length can vary from dog to dog, with some sporting a more classic and recognizable look than others. On average, they have a very thick and soft undercoat with a coarser and often wavier outer coat. Pomskies are well-known for their thick, dense fur that may contain a combination of colors like gray, black, and white.
Pomskies are a relatively new breed of dog, so their dietary needs are still being studied. Generally, they require a balanced diet of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Most dog owners opt for a commercial dog food that contains all of these components in appropriate proportions. It's important to read the ingredients list of the chosen dog food to make sure it doesn't contain anything that could be potentially harmful to your Pomsky's health, such as the artificial sweeteners.
Preparing your home for your new Pomsky is key for making their transition to their new environment as smooth and comfortable as possible. Firstly, you should purchase all of the necessary supplies such as a crate, bedding, food and water dishes, treats, toys, shampoo, and a leash or harness and collar. You'll also want to puppy proof your home by cleaning any areas that may potentially be hazardous, covering areas that may be hard to reach, and blocking any off-limit spaces so Pomsky can't access them.
Pomskies vary in size, depending on the parents used for the breeding. Typically, the size of the Pomsky can range from 10-30 lbs, though this can vary creature to creature depending on genetics. Pomskies are a mix of the two smallest breeds of the Spitz group of canines; the Siberian Husky and Pomeranian. As such, most are smaller than the average size of their two parent breeds. Although small, the Pomsky has a notably large personality and is known for its playful and loving temperament.
Pomskies generally enjoy swimming and doing water-based activities, as many love playing in the water, fetching items and can be taught to do swimming tricks. In fact, due to their Pomeranian and Siberian Husky heritage, many Pomskies can become strong swimmers. Since these dogs tend to be active, wateractivities can prove to be very entertaining for them, particularly when the weather is warm. Exercise in the water can also give your Pomskies an outlet for their boundless energy.
Generally speaking, Pomskies get along well with other household pets. They have a calm, friendly disposition and tend to enjoy spending time with their canine and feline friends. Of course, there can be some exceptions, so it's important to socialize your Pomsky early on in puppyhood and practice proper introductions to help ensure that your Pomksy develops solid relationships with other pets in the house. As with any new relationship between animals, always take things slow and introduce them with plenty of supervision until you feel comfortable they are comfortable with each other.
The amount of daily training each Pomsky needs can vary depending on their age and current skill level. Generally speaking, 15-30 minutes of consistent training per day is recommended for puppies and young dogs; 15 minutes is usually sufficient for dogs that are past the initial training stage. That said, the overall amount of training and the amount of time spent should depend on the individual Pomsky. If the pup starts to lose focus or become distracted during sessions, then shortening the time or dividing it up into multiple smaller chunks during the day could be beneficial.
