Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a cross-breed between two popular canine breeds: the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. They are considered a hybrid breed, sometimes referred to as a designer breed. On average, the Pomsky is slightly larger than a Pomeranian, but smaller than a Siberian Husky. Depending on the pup, it can look like either a miniature husky or a fluffy, cuddly pom! As for the temperament of these hybrid dogs, they retain characteristics of both their parents, though usually less extreme than either breed.
Pomskies are considered to be relatively low-shedding dog breeds. That doesn’t mean they don’t shed at all; like any dog, they do release hair from time to time. However, depending on the type of coat a particular Pomsky inherits from their parents, they may shed significantly less than other breeds. On top of that, those that have thicker coats may have less visible shedding. With regular grooming and brushing, many owners find that their Pomsky’s shedding is very manageable.
Pomskies, as with any dog breed, have specific dietary needs which can vary depending on the individual. While some of these needs may be due to particular health concerns, the majority of these requirements are determined by the breed’s size and lifestyle. Pomskies should ideally be given a high-quality, nutritionally balanced diet that contains proteins, fruits and vegetables, and carbohydrates. Foods that are high in fat, sugar, and calories should be avoided. It is important to ensure adequate vitamin and mineral intake as well as necessary fats and oils.
Preparing for a new Pomsky is exciting, but it also requires careful planning. Before bringing your pup home, be sure to have all the necessary supplies including a little bed, food and water dishes, leash, collar, and toys. Additionally, Pomskies require frequent brushing to keep their coat healthy and free of knots. Lastly, it is important to research a veterinarian and establish a relationship early on; schedule the puppy's first checkup and make sure all the necessary vaccines are administered. Familiarize yourself with the breed's temperament and develop a training regimen.
The size of your Pomsky puppy will ultimately depend on the size of the Pomsky parents. These designer mixed breed dogs, a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian, can grow to anywhere from 10-15 inches in height and 10-30 pounds in weight. Male Pomskies tend to be heavier and larger than females. It is important to get to know the size of both the Husky and the Pomeranian parents to get a better idea of the puppy’s size potential.
Pomskies are generally very active, so the majority of them enjoy swimming. They're likely to take to the water naturally, particularly if their owners take them for regular swimming sessions. Some might be cautious at first, but with the right socialization and patience they should wind up loving the activity. Swimming is a great way to keep your Pomsky healthy and give them a great mental workout. It can provide plenty of cardio, while also acting as a calming exercise for them. Swimming can also make them a little more relaxed and can help to counteract any fatigue they might be feeling.
Pomskies are wonderful family dogs that get along great with kids. They are intelligent, loyal, and love spending time with their humans. Pomskies are often quite tolerant of energetic, active children, and often enjoy playing with them. What's more, Pomskies tend to get along well with other animals, children included. As with any dog, it is always important to supervise them when around children, especially when they are playing. Teaching children how to interact, and play safely with dogs can help ensure that everyone has a great time and everyone stays safe.
Pomskies are considered to be highly intelligent dogs, comparable to many of the most popular canine breeds. As a mix of both the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, Pomsky puppies are known to display many of the best physical traits of both parent breeds while also exhibiting high levels of intelligence. These dogs can learn many commands quickly and retain the information over long periods of time, making them very trainable. Additionally, they are highly social animals and are very eager to be included in any type of family activities.
