Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a crossbreed between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. They typically weigh between 10 and 30 pounds and come in a variety of coat colors, including grey, black, cream, and white. They have an average lifespan of 10 to 14 years and, like their parents, they are highly active and require regular exercise. As a hybrid breed, they often have qualities of both a Pomeranian and a Husky, such as the temperament of a Husky and the size of a Pomeranian.
Pomskies, a designer hybrid breed created by crossing a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, are considered to be low-shedding compared to many breeds of dogs. However, it is important to note that "non-shedding" can be a misleading term, as all dogs produce some dander and hair volume. While the amount shed varies among individuals, Pomskies typically shed very little and are therefore a good choice for allergy sufferers. Some even claim their coats to be hypoallergenic.
Pomskies are very energetic and active dogs and therefore need a balanced diet of high quality, healthy food. Therefore, it is important to avoid certain foods that can be harmful to Pomskies. As a general rule, avoid feeding them any foods that are high in sugar or fats, or anything that contains chocolate, avocados, grapes, Onion, Garlic, Chives or Macadamia nuts as these could be toxic and cause serious health problems. Don't feed any cooked bones to your Pomsky as these can be dangerous and could cause an intestinal blockage or other gastrointestinal problems.
Prior to bringing home your new Pomsky, there are a few steps you can take to ensure your home is prepared for them. First, designate an area of the home as the dog's primary living space. If possible, this should include a comfortable bed, toys, and a few chewable items to chew on. Next, set up a designated outdoor space so the dog can get fresh air and get used to using a particular area for relieving itself.
Pomskies generally vary in size, but generally they are considered small dogs. Most of the time they range from 10-15 inches in height, and weigh between 10-30 pounds. This can vary depending on the breeding and size of their parents, with some Pomskies even being much smaller. Roughly, the size of a Pomsky can be compared to that of a Spitz, a breed of small to medium-sized dogs.
Pomskies are very active dogs and need plenty of daily exercise in order to stay healthy and balanced. Typically, Pomskies need at least 45 minutes of exercise a day, which can be broken up into several walks and play periods. Exercise for these dogs should be fun and challenging to maintain their interest, but also safe and controlled. This could include activities like fetch, agility training, running, and brisk walking. Additionally, Pomskies benefit from mental stimulation through games like hide and seek and puzzle feeders, which will help keep them mentally and physically fit.
Pomskies are known for being outgoing and social, making them great candidates for a multi-pet residence. They tend to form strong bonds with their family and other pets, so when introduced correctly it is likely that they will get along with, and even prefer, the company of other pets. They can be naturally curious and even rambunctious at times, but typically they remain well-behaved and sensitive to their housemates. With proper training, positive reinforcement, and mutual respect, a Pomsky can form healthy, lasting, bonds with all sorts of other animals.
Pomskies can be considered relatively intelligent dogs, as they are both descendants of smart breeds. Pomeranians and Siberian Huskies are both known for their intelligence, so it is reasonable to assume that Pomskies would possess some degree of intelligence. The smart and loyal nature of these dogs makes them highly trainable and eager to please -though this can be quite stubborn or independent at times. Some owners will find that with time and commitment, they can have a well-trained and obedient pet.
