Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a Hybrid, or designer dog that is created by cross breeding a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. They are a relatively new breed, first seen within the past twenty years. Generally, they maintain a small, compact build while showing characteristics from both their parents. Pomskies tend to take on their parent's personalities and display a combination of the traits from both the Pomeranian and Husky. This breed loves to be around people and requires plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to remain content and healthy.
Pomskies are not generally known to be non-shedding dogs, and no breed is truly non-shedding. Pomskies can have a range of hair coat lengths and textures and will typically shed some hair around the house. Although they are certainly lower shedding dogs when compared to a breed like the German Shepherd, brushing and grooming should still be done on a regular basis to keep the coat looking neat and healthy and to keep shedding to a minimum.
Pomskies have some dietary needs that are unique compared to other breeds. While most dogs need a balanced combination of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins, the Pomskies's diet should additionally incorporate Omega-3 fatty acids and small amounts of taurine if possible. Furthermore, this breed needs more of certain minerals, so supplementation may be necessary. Pomskies also require higher quantities of essential fatty acids like Omega-3s and some have a sensitivity to certain grains or foods, so be sure to check with your vet about what would be best for your canine friend.
Yes, Pomsky dogs do have special requirements to meet their needs. Although they require the same amount of exercise and grooming as other dog breeds, they also need ample mental stimulation and human interaction. As an extremely intelligent and social breed, Pomskies require companionship and playtime throughout the day. Training should begin as early as possible and when these doggies feel bored or left alone, they can be known to bark excessively and destroy things. Additionally, they need a high-quality and balanced diet to ensure optimal wellbeing.
Pomskies are a cross-breed of the Pomeranian and the Siberian husky. As a result, they can range in size and stature from toy breeds to small-medium. Generally, Pomskies stand 11-15 inches and weigh 13-20 lbs, though some may even reach up to 30 lbs. Because Pomskies are a hybrid, their size can differ from litter to litter and can also vary widely between individuals within the same litter. Despite the wide range of sizes, these hybrid dogs generally are recognized as being small-medium in size.
Every dog is unique and the exercise requirements for a Pomsky can vary depending on its age, size, and overall health. Generally speaking, Pomskies need approximately 40-60 minutes of exercise every day, preferably split into two or three sessions. Exercise is paramount for this breed since they have a lot of high-energy, and are known for being quite active. Helping your pup get regular physical activity can also promote good behavior and help control any potential destructive or devious behavior. If such behavior becomes a problem, you should consult with a vet or a specialist in canine behavioral therapy.
Pomskies can be a great option for first-time owners, due to their hybrid nature, as they bring together the best of both worlds. They tend to be relatively low-maintenance, and have a low-level of exercise needs. These characteristics make them very easy for first-time owners to handle. They are also highly affectionate and playful, making them an ideal companion for people lacking prior experience raising a pet. Additionally, their small size makes them an ideal breed to own in an urban setting, and their easy-going nature make them typically easy to train.
The amount of minutes per day needed for a Pomsky's training will vary depending on the age, experience level, and personality of the dog. Generally, it's recommended to dedicate at least 15 minutes each day to playing, exercising, and training your pup. However, these activities should be spread out throughout the day and can extend to an hour or more depending on your individual pup. Additionally, you should also ensure that each session includes frequent rewards, consistent reinforcement, and plenty of positive reinforcement to reinforce good behaviors.
