Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid dog breed that is a cross between a Pomeranian and an Alaskan Husky, and have been around since the early 2000s. They are small in size, but don't be fooled; they are full of energy and incredibly loyal. These dogs are highly intelligent and enjoy training. Their intelligence and size make them a great therapy, emotional support, or protection dog. They tend to be quite vocal with their barks, and have thick, double-layered coats that require regular grooming to maintain.
A Pomsky's coat is known to be unique and varied. Its characteristic soft, fluffy, and luxurious fur typically has a combination of the Pomeranian and Siberian Husky's coats, with the coloring coming from either one or both parent breeds. Depending on the color genes of each Pomsky, their fur can range from white, black, or any amount of grey and brown tones sometimes with white patches. Though its grooming can be quite intensive, it's extremely soft to the touch and a beautiful sight when adequately taken care of.
Pomskies have their own unique dietary needs as they are a mix of two different breeds. Proper nutrition for Pomskies should include a balanced and nutrient-rich blend of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and essential vitamins and minerals. Generally, a high-quality kibble designed specifically for this type of smaller-sized breed should do the trick, as well as occasional healthy treats suitable for small dogs, such as cooked vegetables and fruits. It is also good to make sure they have plenty of fresh, clean water available at all times.
Before buying a Pomsky, it's important to be prepared with the right supplies to care for your new pup. Essentials like food, a bed, toys, a crate, a collar, and a leash should all be purchased ahead of time. You may also want to consider items like grooming supplies like a brush and shampoo, waste bags, and a first aid kit in case of any medical emergencies. Of course, you'll also need to provide adequate food and water bowls and an ID tag with your contact information. Lastly, be sure to baby proof your home for a safe environment.
Pomskies are considered to be medium-sized dogs, slightly larger than a Pomeranian, but smaller than a Siberian Husky. While they may appear rather large due to their thick, double coat, they usually only grow to be about 10-15 inches tall and typically weigh around 10-30 pounds. Essentially, they are the perfect size for apartment dwellers and other people with limited space, yet they still make excellent companions. Pomskies are incredibly loyal and highly energetic, and they love to play and spend time with their families.
Pomskies definitely enjoy being in the water, however just like all breeds they have individual preferences. Some Pomskies take to swimming more naturally than others. As with any water activity, it is important to ensure that your pup is comfortable in the water and that they know how to safely enter and exit the water before taking them into deeper waters. As with any activity, make sure it is age appropriate as younger Pomskies should not be swimming until they are physically mature. With proper introduction and training, it is likely that your Pomsky will love being in the water.
Pomskies can make excellent family dogs when they are well-trained and properly cared for. They are loyal, friendly, and generally quite loving toward people, which makes them great around kids. They typically don’t bark much, so they are great for people living in smaller apartments or areas with stricter noise restrictions. Pomskies need plenty of daily exercise to stay healthy and happy, but they aren’t too high energy, so owners don’t have to worry too much about them running wild.
Training a Pomsky can be a rewarding experience for both the pet and the owner, but like any other breed, it does require dedication. It is important to understand that while training a Pomsky can be relatively easy, it still requires that the pet parents understand what they need to do in order to ensure that their pet is learning positive behaviors. With consistent positive reinforcement, cue practice, and a good understanding of their pup's needs, a Pomsky's parents can help to create a happy and healthy bond between their pet and themselves.
