Questions & Answers
Pomskies are hybrid dogs, developed by crossing a Pomeranian with a Siberian Husky. Consequently, Pomskies are a hardy breed with a small stature and are well known for their intelligence, loyalty and vigor. It is important to note that not all Pomskies possess the exact same traits, as the disposition and physical appearance of the breed can vary vastly among individual dogs. When considering a Pomsky pup, it is important to be aware of potential medical and personality traits that may be passed on from both parent breeds.
The Pomsky's coat is a combination of both the Husky and the Pomeranian's signature coats, producing a unique and fluffy look. Though the only one of its kind, the Pomsky coat typically consists of a long and soft outer coat with a soft and short undercoat. Additionally, Pomskies come with a wide variety of colors, ranging from the typical black and white, to more exotic colors like merle, or even a solid coat of a single color. This diversity makes the Pomsky's coat particularly desired among potential owners.
Pomskies are a unique cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, and as such, they have unique dietary needs. Many veterinarians recommend foods that contain a combination of lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and carbohydrates that are specifically fit for your Pomsky's size and age. When choosing the best dog food, look for a high-quality product that is tailored to small breed dogs and contains balanced nutrition that leans towards smaller kibble sizes. An optimal diet would be one with a combination of whole protein, fruits and vegetables, and a mix of fats and carbohydrates.
Pomsky dogs are quite special and do have some special requirements. They are high energy and require regular exercise and training to stay healthy and happy. They need a diet specifically tailored for their size and activity level to make sure they get the right nutrition. Additionally, Pomsky will need to be groomed regularly in order to maintain their beautiful coat. Brushing and trimming their fur is important to keep them looking and feeling their best. Socialization is also very important and providing them with ample opportunity to interact with other people as well as other dogs will help them build trust and confidence.
Pomskies typically weigh between 15 and 30 pounds and are usually around 12-17 inches at the withers (the highest point of the shoulder blades). However, some individuals can become larger than this, with some individuals reaching weights of up to 45 pounds. It is important to remember that size and growth is largely dependent on the individual and their exact genetic makeup, and thus the size of the dog may vary from breeder to breeder and even within a litter.
The amount of walking your Pomsky should receive each day depends on several factors, such as their age, size, health, and activity level. Generally, a good goal is about 30-45 minutes of walking daily. However, if your Pomsky is young, smaller, or has a higher energy level, you may need to increase that. Ideally, you should break up the walking into two or three short periods throughout the day, or combine a short, brisk walk with playtime. Some activities that are good for Pomskies include running, playing with other dogs, or even agility courses.
Pomskies often get along with other pets. Every pup is different, so the amount of interaction and relationship that will develop between your Pomsky and other pets will depend largely on the individual personality. Generally speaking, Pomskies tend to be friendly to other pets, especially cats and small animals. That said, it's always important to keep a close eye on the initial introductions, as any dog has the potential to act aggressively. Through proper socialization and role modeling from your household, your Pomsky can develop a happy, cooperative relationship with your other pets.
Training a Pomsky is not necessarily easy, as with any breed, a great deal of patience is required. That being said, if you are dedicated and consistent in the methods you employ, the task of training can be relatively straightforward. Pomskies inherit intelligence from both the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, meaning they learn quickly and enjoy engaging in the process of training. Positive rewards in the form of treats, toys, or praise will assist in encouraging desirable behavior. A reliable understanding of behaviors such as barking, jumping, and disobedience can be established by providing clear cues and expectations.
